ATMOS Space Cargo has successfully closed a €25.7 million Series A financing round to advance its innovative orbital transport and re-entry vehicles. Balnord and Expansion Ventures co-led this significant investment alongside several prominent European funds and the European Innovation Council. This substantial capital injection will enable the European aerospace company to transition from early demonstration phases to regular operational services.


Advancing the PHOENIX Fleet

The newly secured funding will directly support the construction and operation of an initial fleet comprising three PHOENIX 2 spacecraft. These reusable orbital transfer and return vehicles feature integrated propulsion systems capable of sustaining missions in low Earth orbit for several months. The phased operational campaign aims to transform complex orbital return missions into a highly reliable and repeatable European commercial service.

Each PHOENIX 2 vehicle utilizes an innovative inflatable atmospheric decelerator that functions effectively as both a heat shield and an aerodynamic brake. This advanced non-ablative design significantly minimizes material loss and environmental impact during the highly controlled atmospheric re-entry process. Consequently, the proprietary technology maximizes payload efficiency and ensures precise landings for the rapid recovery of valuable orbital cargo.

Establishing European Launch Operations

Initial recovery operations for the advanced spacecraft are currently being prepared near Santa Maria in the Portuguese Azores. This strategic location operates under a specific commercial orbital re-entry license granted by a continental European Union member state. Securing this crucial regulatory approval marks a major milestone for establishing independent and sovereign space logistics within European jurisdiction.

The aerospace company has already signed a comprehensive seven-mission agreement with Space Cargo Unlimited to utilize this new infrastructure. Furthermore, eager clients have already booked eighty percent of the available payload capacity for the highly anticipated inaugural commercial flight. This strong market demand clearly highlights the urgent need for accessible microgravity manufacturing and reliable orbital return capabilities across Europe.

Expanding Defence and Next-Generation Capabilities

Alongside its commercial endeavors, the company is officially launching ATMOS WORKS to serve European governmental and defence institutions. This dedicated business unit focuses entirely on providing secure space logistics and responsive operational capabilities for sensitive hardware and data. The dual-use architecture of the platform perfectly supports complex in-orbit demonstration and validation missions for these specialized institutional clients.

Dedicated engineers have also commenced the early development of PHOENIX 3 to meet the growing demands of the evolving space economy. This next-generation orbital return vehicle is specifically designed to accommodate a massive payload capacity of approximately one metric tonne. Such a significant upgrade represents a remarkable tenfold increase in overall capacity compared to the current PHOENIX 2 model.

Industry experts note that Europe currently faces a strategic risk due to the distinct lack of independent orbital return infrastructure. ATMOS Space Cargo directly addresses this critical gap by building sovereign access to and from space for various vital sectors.
