ANELLO Photonics and Q-CTRL have announced a strategic partnership to develop a pioneering navigation system for environments where GPS is unavailable. This collaboration will merge ANELLO's silicon photonics-based inertial sensors with Q-CTRL's quantum magnetic navigation software. The resulting technology aims to provide highly resilient and precise positioning for unmanned aerial vehicles and other critical platforms.

Addressing a Critical Vulnerability

Global Navigation Satellite Systems (GNSS) have become indispensable for modern operations, but their vulnerabilities pose a significant and growing threat. Deliberate interference like jamming and spoofing creates a risk estimated to cost the U.S. economy $1 billion daily. Recent incidents in regions such as the Persian Gulf highlight the urgent need for alternative navigation solutions for both military and commercial applications.

A Novel Technological Fusion

This partnership marks the first integration of silicon photonics-based inertial sensing with quantum-powered magnetic map matching. ANELLO Photonics contributes its Silicon Photonics Optical Gyroscope (SiPhOG™), a high-precision solid-state inertial system. Q-CTRL provides its Ironstone Opal software, which leverages quantum sensing to create a robust navigation capability that can operate independently.

The combined technologies create a multi-layered Quantum Navigation Solution (QNS) that functions as a critical backup to GNSS. This layered approach delivers continuous positioning estimates that remain accurate and do not degrade over the duration of a mission. It is designed to define the future of resilient navigation for autonomous platforms operating in the most demanding environments.

Leadership Perspectives on the Collaboration

Dr. Mario Paniccia, CEO of ANELLO Photonics, emphasized that reliable navigation is fundamental to safety and mission assurance in autonomous systems. He stated that combining ANELLO's proven SiPhOG technology with Q-CTRL's quantum solutions creates a powerful new architecture. This system is specifically designed to deliver resilient positioning when GPS is compromised or completely unavailable.

Professor Michael J. Biercuk, CEO of Q-CTRL, highlighted his company's focus on making quantum technologies useful for real-world challenges. He expressed excitement about the collaboration, noting ANELLO's commitment to enabling missions for advanced autonomous platforms. The partnership aims to deliver the most advanced capabilities to customers and defense personnel who rely on precise navigation.

The Future of Resilient Navigation

The need for resilient navigation is becoming a critical requirement as electronic warfare capabilities advance and autonomy expands across sectors. This collaboration directly addresses the demand for next-generation mobility solutions that can operate reliably in contested environments. The technology will support a wide range of applications, from commercial logistics to critical defense operations.

The strategic alliance between ANELLO Photonics and Q-CTRL represents a significant step forward in addressing the vulnerabilities of GPS. By fusing cutting-edge silicon photonics with advanced quantum sensing, the partnership is set to deliver a scalable and robust navigation solution. This innovation will enhance the safety, autonomy, and mission success of critical platforms worldwide.
