Airbound, an aerospace company focused on designing highly efficient aircraft, announced a $37 million Series A round and a new commercial deployment agreement with the Indian state of Andhra Pradesh. The funding will support engineering, commercial-scale manufacturing, and go-to-market initiatives for its autonomous transport aircraft. Since its launch in 2023, the company has raised nearly $50 million to advance its vision of making airborne movement more practical and affordable.
A New Class of Aircraft
Airbound states that transport aircraft have seen little fundamental change in their core architecture over time, despite their importance to global logistics. The company combines autonomy and advanced materials with a physics-first approach to create a new class of transport aircraft designed to weigh less than the matter they move. This shift changes what it costs to move people and goods, offering a different economic equation for transport.
Investor Confidence and Funding
The Series A round was led by Greenoaks, with participation from new and existing investors including DoorDash, Lachy Groom, Lightspeed, and Humba Ventures. Founder and CEO Naman Pushp said the company believes in a world where flying is cheaper than taking the bus and moving a single package costs less than moving 20 tons by truck. Greenoaks partner Neil Shah added that Airbound breaks the long-standing trade-off between fast and cheap transport.
Rethinking Aircraft Physics
According to Airbound, carrying a single passenger or roughly 100 kilograms of cargo typically requires an aircraft weighing around 400 kilograms once fuel and payload are counted. Most of that weight is spent lifting the aircraft itself, not the useful payload, which drives up operating costs. Airbound is designed to reverse this equation so that the majority of weight in flight is the payload being transported.
Commercial Momentum in India
Under its new agreement with Andhra Pradesh, Airbound will establish a drone delivery network connecting three cities and enabling faster, lower-cost transport. The company intends to scale up to 10,000 daily flights, supporting retail, e-commerce, and healthcare deliveries across the region. According to the company, this program will become the playbook for expanding aerial delivery services nationwide.
A Broader Vision for Movement
DoorDash Labs Head of Product Harrison Shih said his team backs groups tackling hard problems and was drawn to Airbound's first-principles approach to physics and cost constraints. The company believes the same physics that moves a diagnostic sample between hospitals can later move freight and people between cities. A 300-kilometer journey, for example, could become a 20-minute flight, making physical distance less relevant in the way the internet did for information.
Operating in a Demanding Market
Founder Naman Pushp said the benchmark for delivery in India is extremely high, requiring roughly 10-minute doorstep service at very low cost. He noted that a solution that works in India is likely to work anywhere because of this complexity. Airbound's deployment in Andhra Pradesh is intended to prove its technology in one of the world's most demanding operating environments.
Airbound's new funding and state-level deployment agreement signal growing commercial traction for a new category of lightweight autonomous aircraft. By targeting efficiency gains at the level of physics, the company aims to transform logistics and eventually human mobility in markets around the world.
