Understood Care, an AI-native patient advocacy platform, has secured $8.4 million in funding to address the complexities of the U.S. healthcare system. The financing, which includes a $5 million seed round co-led by Rethink Education and Zeal Capital Partners, will enhance the company's technology and expand its services. The platform aims to simplify care navigation for millions of older and disabled adults who struggle with administrative burdens.

Addressing a Systemic Healthcare Challenge

The American healthcare landscape is increasingly fragmented, marked by disconnected provider networks, frequent policy changes, and complex administrative requirements. This system poses significant challenges for the nation's aging population, which currently exceeds 60 million adults over age 65. For these individuals, managing the non-medical aspects of their care has become an overwhelming and often impossible task.

A Hybrid Approach to Patient Advocacy

Understood Care provides patients with dedicated human advocates from backgrounds in nursing, social work, and healthcare administration. These professionals build close relationships with patients through video calls, phone conversations, and text messages to resolve issues. They assist with critical tasks like scheduling appointments, accessing community resources, and coordinating care across different providers.

Supporting these advocates is Ava, the company's proprietary AI co-pilot that operates behind the scenes to enhance efficiency. Ava automates time-consuming administrative work, such as summarizing medical records, drafting communications, and initiating phone calls. This technology allows human advocates to focus more on providing direct emotional support and complex problem-solving for patients.

Strategic Funding and Market Position

The company's total funding of $8.4 million includes the seed round and $3.4 million in pre-seed capital from investors like 1984 Ventures and Ycombinator. This new capital is earmarked for accelerating the development of the Ava AI co-pilot and deepening partnerships with providers and payers. The investment signals strong confidence in the company's scalable solution for a persistent healthcare problem.

A key aspect of Understood Care's model is its use of new CMS payment pathways established in 2024 to support whole-person care. This innovative approach allows the company's services to be covered by benefits for most Medicare patients. Consequently, the vast majority of users can access this personalized advocacy at zero out-of-pocket cost.

Rapid Growth and Future Outlook

Since launching in March 2025, Understood Care has demonstrated significant traction, expanding its platform to all 50 states within eight months. The company reports high engagement, with patients contacting advocates over five times per month on average. This rapid adoption underscores the urgent and widespread need for effective care navigation solutions across the country.

Looking ahead, Understood Care has established relationships with three of the largest Medicare Advantage plans, positioning it to reach a majority of eligible patients. The company is on track to support more than 10,000 new patients in 2026. Investors praise the team's unique blend of healthcare expertise and technical talent to address this critical market need.

Understood Care's latest funding round marks a significant step toward integrating patient advocacy as a standard component of healthcare. By combining compassionate human support with powerful AI automation, the company is poised to reduce system-wide costs and improve outcomes. This hybrid model offers a scalable and accessible solution to one of the most pressing challenges facing patients today.
