The Milken-Motsepe Prize in AI and Manufacturing invites innovative companies across Africa to compete for a share of $2 million in prizes by showcasing breakthrough solutions that leverage artificial intelligence (AI) and other emerging technologies in the manufacturing sector. This global prize initiative is focused on accelerating scalable impact, improving efficiency, reducing waste, and driving job creation through cutting-edge innovations.


Program Overview

Backed by the Milken Institute and the Motsepe Foundation, this prize targets startups and growth-stage companies operating within Africa’s manufacturing value chains, seeking to transform operations using AI and advanced data analytics.

Key objectives include:

  • Reducing industrial waste
  • Driving commercial scalability
  • Creating workforce opportunities across emerging markets

Companies are encouraged to present AI-powered solutions that demonstrate tangible and measurable improvements in manufacturing outcomes.

Eligibility Criteria

To qualify, applicant companies must:

  • Be operating in Africa’s manufacturing sector
  • Have a minimum of two years in operation
  • Have raised Series A or later funding
  • Demonstrate contributions to workforce development and job creation

Prize Structure and Awards

The total prize pool is valued at $2 million, distributed as follows:

  • Grand Prize: $1 million
  • Runner-Up: $250,000
  • Most Advanced Use of 4IR (Fourth Industrial Revolution): $100,000
  • Semi-Finalist Awards: $50,000 each for 10 teams
  • Finalist Awards: $30,000 each for 5 teams

Competition Timeline and Phases

1. Application & Semi-Finalist Selection

Participants submit their business models and technical proposals. From these, 10 semi-finalists are selected by an expert judging panel and awarded $50,000 each.

2. Pitch Event & Finalist Announcement
Semi-finalists pitch to a live panel of investors and industry leaders. Five finalists are chosen and awarded $30,000 each to further develop their innovations.

3. Grand Prize Submission
Finalists submit detailed materials for evaluation. Winners are selected based on scalability, technological integration, commercial viability, and impact metrics. The awards will be presented in May 2026.

Impact Potential

With Africa’s population projected to surpass 2 billion by 2050 and each manufacturing job estimated to produce up to 20x multiplier effects in economic activity, AI-driven industrial innovation stands to significantly uplift regional economies. The Industry 4.0 revolution, including AI applications, is expected to generate over $1.5 trillion in added value—around 10% of the global AI market.
