TechX Clean Energy Accelerator

An intensive 15-week engine for clean energy startups to secure grant funding, expert mentoring, and field trials with industry leaders

Organizer: Net Zero Technology Center
Deadline: January 5, 2026 (in 6 days)
Categories: Funding , Accelerator
Global

The TechX Clean Energy Accelerator is the flagship entrepreneurship engine of the Net Zero Technology Centre, designed to fast-track the commercialization of high-potential clean energy startups. Since its inception, the program has focused on bridging the gap between innovative early-stage concepts and industrial-scale deployment. By providing significant funding, specialized mentorship, and direct access to a global network of energy operators, the accelerator seeks to empower the next generation of founders to drive a sustainable and affordable transition to net zero.

Core Program Structure and Funding

  • Grant and Investment Options: Participating startups may receive up to £100,000 in grant funding. Depending on the cohort year and agreement, this may be issued as a repayable grant or through an Advanced Subscription Agreement (ASA/SAFE) where funding later converts into equity.
  • Intensive Duration: The program typically runs for 15 weeks and requires a full-time commitment from at least one founder.
  • Hybrid Delivery Model: While primarily virtual and aligned with the GMT time zone, the curriculum includes mandatory in-person weeks in Aberdeen, Scotland, for onboarding and final showcase events.
  • Post-Program Growth: Graduates benefit from an additional two years of follow-on business support and access to co-working facilities at the TechX Growth space.
  • Competitive Prize Pools: Cohorts often compete for a share of substantial cash prizes during the final Demo Day, with previous pools reaching up to £200,000.

Strategic Technology Focus Areas

  • Carbon Management: Novel solutions for carbon capture (point source, direct air, or ocean capture), transportation, and secure geological or nature-based storage.
  • Low Carbon Hydrogen: Innovation in zero-carbon hydrogen production, specialized membranes, storage infrastructure, and industrial fuel-switching technologies.
  • Renewable Power: Offshore and onshore advancements, including wave, tidal, floating solar, and the repurposing of existing oil and gas infrastructure for renewable generation.
  • Alternative Fuels and Chemicals: Production of e-fuels and sustainable fuels for maritime, aviation, and heavy transport, as well as green ammonia and methanol production.
  • Industrial Decarbonization: High-temperature heat pumps, thermal storage, and energy efficiency solutions specifically designed for heavy industrial applications.
  • Digital and Autonomous Solutions: AI-enabled resource management, digital twins, remote operations, robotics, and drones for autonomous offshore monitoring.

Eligibility and Selection Criteria

  • Technology Readiness: Applicants must be developing novel technologies at a Technology Readiness Level (TRL) between 2 and 6, ranging from early-stage concepts to demonstrated prototypes.
  • Industrial Scope: The program strictly targets technologies with industrial applications; solutions solely intended for residential or passenger road transport are considered out of scope.
  • Global Participation: While open to international startups, non-UK companies must demonstrate a clear plan to benefit the UK economy and incorporate a UK entity before the program commences.
  • Innovation Ownership: Startups must maintain full ownership of the intellectual property associated with the technology submitted in the application.
  • Commitment to Diversity: Successful applicants must demonstrate a commitment to building diverse and inclusive teams or be open to guidance on improving organizational culture.

Mentorship and Market Access

  • Industrial Pilot Opportunities: The program facilitates direct introductions to industry leaders such as bp, Equinor, ADNOC, and ConocoPhillips to secure field trials and technology validation.
  • Expert Advisory Network: Founders are matched with a pool of over 50 dedicated mentors and technical experts from across the energy value chain.
  • Investor Readiness Segment: Specialized training on financial modeling, pitch deck refinement, and equity fundraising culminates in 1-to-1 meetings with selected investors.
  • Business Development Toolkit: Curriculum modules cover essential startup functions, including IP strategy, legal and tax optimization, and the calculation of carbon impact metrics.

By integrating specialized technical guidance with robust commercial strategy, the TechX Clean Energy Accelerator positions early-stage companies to navigate the unique challenges of the energy sector. The program’s focus on industrial validation and long-term alumni support ensures that pioneering innovations move beyond the laboratory and into the global market, contributing to a significant and measurable reduction in greenhouse gas emissions.
