Program Structure and Focus
The Sustainable Aero Lab's program guides startups through a structured journey, designed to refine their projects and prepare them for market impact. Startups engage in four iterative mentorship sessions annually, collaborating with experts from the startup, aviation, venture capital, and scientific communities.
Key Program Stages:
- Application: The initial step involves submitting an application through the F6S platform, followed by an interview with the Lab's Venture Team, and finally, onboarding into the program.
- Lab Session 1:1 Mentoring: This phase is repeated four times and focuses on defining SMART (Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, Time-bound) objectives, completing necessary venture documentation, engaging with mentors, and providing updates to the Venture Team.
- Graduation: Upon completion, startups define their long-term objectives and gain access to the program's alumni community.
The Lab also hosts weekly Drop-In Sessions every Thursday at 5:00 PM CET, offering interested startups an opportunity to learn more about the program. Additionally, specific in-person Lab Sessions are scheduled, such as one on September 18th in Hamburg, Germany.
Focus Areas
The Sustainable Aero Lab concentrates its efforts on projects that offer a tangible reduction in aviation's climate footprint, addressing both carbon and non-carbon emissions.
- Sustainable Aviation Fuels (SAF): This area is seen as a rapid path to decarbonization by replacing fossil fuels. While current supply is limited, the program addresses challenges related to massive scaling, cost reduction, and supply chain fragmentation, recognizing growing demand driven by mandates and incentives.
- Hydrogen in Aviation: Although nascent, hydrogen is a promising path to true zero-carbon flight due to its energy density and non-greenhouse gas combustion. The program acknowledges challenges in cryogenic storage, propulsion systems, aircraft design, airport infrastructure, and the need for significant supply chain upscaling.
- Electrification: This includes pure battery-powered and hybrid-electric propulsion. While battery technology currently limits long-haul flights, it shows promise for shorter ranges. Challenges involve safety concerns with lithium batteries, limited battery lifecycle in aviation, and the environmental impact of raw material mining.
- Novel Aircraft Designs, Materials, and Design Processes: Focuses on enhancing aerodynamic efficiency, reducing drag, and achieving lighter airframes through innovative materials and structural optimization. The program emphasizes accelerating development and certification through computational tools and welcomes innovations in digital design, simulation, and prototyping.
- Efficient Air Traffic Management and Regulations: Addresses opportunities for higher efficiencies through optimized routing, flight trajectories, and airport operations by challenging outdated practices. This area can yield relatively short-term emission reductions without significant hardware investment, despite hurdles like entrenched operational norms and fragmented governance.
- Efficient Propulsion: Targets architectures based on internal combustion engines (piston and turbine) and prop fan designs that offer superior fuel savings and lower emissions. This remains crucial as aviation transitions to SAF and hydrogen, which are expected to remain scarce and expensive commodities in the medium term. Challenges include the complexity, cost, and time required for developing and certifying new propulsion architectures.
The Sustainable Aero Lab is a key initiative driving climate-neutral aviation. It offers a unique platform for startups to connect with mentors, investors, and industry partners, providing free participation and rolling admissions. For ventures focused on SAF, hydrogen, electrification, new aircraft designs, efficient air traffic, and propulsion, the Lab provides crucial support and visibility.
