Applications are currently open for the fifth cohort of the SoCal – Canadian Black Tech Express 2026. This initiative, a partnership between the Consulate General of Canada in Los Angeles and The Daraja Collective, is designed to connect early-stage, tech-focused Canadian companies led by Black or BIPOC entrepreneurs with business development and investor contacts in Southern California. The program aims to increase the number of export-ready Canadian businesses operated by visible minorities that are active in the U.S. market. This year's cohort will participate in dedicated programming in Los Angeles during #LATechWeek, scheduled for October 12-16.
Program Details
• In-Person Programming: Participants will attend a dedicated program in Los Angeles from October 12-16, coinciding with #LATechWeek.
• Virtual Preparation: A mandatory five-week virtual preparation period will run from August 24 to September 30, requiring a commitment of one to two hours per week.
Benefits
• Travel Cost Coverage: Accepted companies with a minimum of $100K CAD in Annual Recurring Revenue (ARR) and at least one full-time employee are eligible to have up to 50% of their travel costs for the trip covered.
Eligibility Criteria
• Company Profile: Applicants must be early-stage Canadian 'tech' companies led or operated by a Black entrepreneur, or have at least one Black member on the management team.
• Financial Standing: Companies should be generating revenue or have previously raised venture funding. A preferred ARR of over CAD $100,000 and/or prior funding from venture capital or angel investors is desired.
• Funding Stage: Priority will be given to companies seeking seed to Series A funding in October 2026. Historically, cohort companies have been preparing to raise between 500k and 10 million USD.
• Market Interest: Applicants must be actively seeking opportunities in the Southern California market, including potential local investors, mentors, strategic partners, or clients.
• Product Status: A well-defined Minimum Viable Product (MVP) or Service is required.
Application Process
• Application Deadline: The final day to submit applications is July 31, 2026.
• Pitch Deck Review: All submitted pitch decks will be reviewed by General Partners from three Southwest US-based venture funds that invest in Black-owned or led tech startups: Black Ops Ventures, DVRGNT Ventures, and MUSA Capital.
