The OIST Innovation Accelerator is a competitive 10-month entrepreneurship residency for global deep-tech founders, scientists, and researchers ready to build, expand, and commercialize their ventures in the Japanese market. Based at the Okinawa Institute of Science and Technology (OIST) oceanside campus, the program is designed to fuse focused R&D with structured go-to-market work, helping teams validate their problem-solution fit, build early traction, and position themselves for their next stage of growth.
Program at a Glance
• Cohort: 2027-2028
• Location: Okinawa, Japan
• Duration: 10-month residency (June 2027 – March 2028)
• Funding: Up to ¥10 million in non-dilutive project funding
• Teams Selected: 4 per cohort
• Target Technology Readiness Level (TRL): TRL 4–6
• Target Innovation Readiness Level (IRL): IRL 2–3
• Application Period: April – June 28, 2026
Program Structure
The program is organized into three distinct phases, each with concrete deliverables designed for building and selling in Japan.
• Phase 1: Discover (Months 1–4): Participants engage in deep market exploration through structured fieldwork and expert guidance to validate problem-solution fit with Japanese customers and stakeholders. This phase focuses on developing a clear intellectual property strategy, ensuring teams know what to build and for whom.
• Phase 2: Design (Months 4–6): Using insights from the discovery phase, teams leverage OIST’s lab facilities to build a customer-facing MVP, prototype, or demo. The business model and go-to-market strategy are refined based on validated market data rather than initial assumptions.
• Phase 3: Go (Months 7–10): The final phase is dedicated to market entry and securing tangible proof of traction. This includes acquiring early customers, Letters of Intent, Memorandums of Understanding, and paid pilots. Teams graduate with a data room, a growth narrative, and introductions to prepare them for investment.
Benefits and Support
• Funding & Setup: Up to ¥10 million in non-dilutive project funding; VISA sponsorship and relocation support; access to OIST’s world-class lab facilities and shared research equipment; a rental laptop and monitor; and potential for incubator space in Okinawa post-graduation, subject to traction.
• Program Support: Structured coaching and practicum across all program phases; dedicated support for Japan-specific customer discovery fieldwork; and assistance with de-risking the first Japanese hire.
• Growth & Investment Readiness: Opportunities to network and pitch at Startup Elevate, OIST’s flagship international startup event; introductions to Japanese VCs and corporate partners; and preparation of a data room, pitch deck, and other materials for the next funding round.
• Ecosystem Access: Access to OIST’s global industry network; potential connections to OIST research units and researchers; and visibility to potential investors, including the OIST-Lifetime Ventures Fund.
• IP & Incorporation: IP created independently by the team during the program remains theirs. OIST provides guidance on IP filing, with costs covered by a separate budget. Support for company formation procedures is also provided from a separate budget.

• Startups with existing or potential connections to OIST research.
• Teams of two or more co-founders with complementary technical and business skills.
Selection Process and Timeline
The selection process is conducted in English and unfolds across several stages:
• Stage 1: Application (April – June 28, 2026): Applications are submitted online and reviewed on a rolling basis. Sixteen promising startups are selected for online interviews.
• Stage 2: Online Interview (Mid-July / Early August 2026): The top 16 teams participate in a 45-minute online interview, consisting of a 5-minute pitch and a 40-minute Q&A session. The top 8 teams advance to the next stage.
