By providing a structured curriculum alongside significant equity-free capital, GATEWAY49 empowers entrepreneurs to solve complex challenges in sectors critical to the region's economic and technological future.

Program Structure and Financial Support

  • Equity-Free Grant Funding: Early-stage startups can receive up to €35,000 in non-repayable grants, while later-stage teams are eligible for €5,000 in support, with no requirement to surrender company shares.
  • Duration and Phases: The program spans nine months, divided into three distinct phases: Phase 1 (0–3 months) for business model development, Phase 2 (4–6 months) for prototyping and market testing, and Phase 3 (7–9 months) for investor readiness and scaling.
  • Co-working and Infrastructure: Participants gain 24/7 access to modern office spaces in Lübeck and have the opportunity to utilize specialized facilities like the FabLab for rapid prototyping.
  • Expert Coaching: Each startup is paired with professional coaches and mentors from a pool of over 50 industry experts to provide tailored strategic guidance.
  • Industrial Network Access: The accelerator facilitates direct connections to a network of more than 40 corporate partners and established regional companies for potential pilot projects.

Core Focus Areas and Sectors

  • Life Science and MedTech: Innovation in medical technology, healthcare services, and biotechnological advancements.
  • Logistics and Smart City: Development of intelligent urban infrastructure, transport optimization, and supply chain solutions.
  • Food Industry: Sustainable food production, processing technologies, and new consumer products.
  • Energy and GreenTech: Clean energy solutions, efficiency technologies, and environmental protection initiatives.
  • Construction and PropTech: Modernization of the building sector through digital tools and sustainable materials.

Participation Requirements and Eligibility

  • Stage of Development: The program accepts "Early Stage" teams (pre-incorporation or early prototypes) and "Later Stage" startups (existing companies looking to scale or enter the regional market).
  • Sustainability Alignment: Applicants must demonstrate how their business model contributes to at least one of the 17 United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
  • Geographical Focus: While open to various founders, participating teams must have a clear intention to establish their presence or create economic value within the Schleswig-Holstein region.
  • Team Composition: Applications are primarily sought from teams of two to four individuals who demonstrate high commitment and complementary skill sets.
  • Participation Commitment: Selected founders are expected to actively participate in workshops, coaching sessions, and networking events throughout the nine-month duration.

Selection and Graduation

  • Competitive Selection Process: Up to 15 startups are selected per cohort through a multi-stage process involving a written application and a final pitch in front of an expert jury.
  • Milestone-Based Progress: Continuation through the three phases of the program is contingent upon meeting specific development milestones and performance reviews.
  • Demo Day Showcase: The program culminates in a high-profile Demo Day event, providing a platform for founders to pitch their validated business models to a large audience of venture capitalists, business angels, and corporate representatives.

Through its unique combination of financial backing, technical resources, and deep-rooted industrial connections, GATEWAY49 serves as a critical catalyst for the northern German startup ecosystem. By bridging the gap between academic research and industrial application, the program ensures that sustainable and technology-driven ideas have the structured support needed to achieve long-term commercial success and regional impact.
