Africa Deep Tech Challenge 2026: The Laptop LLM Challenge

Build offline, on-device AI that runs efficiently on affordable 8 GB laptops

Organizer: Africa Deep Tech Foundation
Deadline: August 25, 2026 (in 25 days)
Categories: Competition/Challenge, Award/Prize
Region: Africa

Applications are now open for the Africa Deep Tech Challenge 2026: The Laptop LLM Challenge, an engineering competition inviting African innovators to build practical language-model applications that operate entirely on affordable, widely available laptops.

Organized by the Africa Deep Tech Foundation, the challenge aims to make artificial intelligence more accessible across Africa by reducing dependence on paid cloud APIs, high-end computing infrastructure, stable internet connectivity, and continuous electricity. Participants will develop efficient, privacy-focused AI systems that can run locally on an 8 GB laptop with integrated graphics.

Challenge Focus

Participants must build a working, end-to-end, on-device language-model application that operates without cloud dependencies. Each solution must address a defined problem domain and demonstrate meaningful integration between artificial intelligence and another technical or practical discipline.

The challenge includes seven application domains:

• Math & Scientific Reasoning
• Healthcare & Medical
• Agriculture
• Creative Writing
• Coding Assistants
• Corporate & Enterprise Productivity
• Autonomous AI Agents

Eligible applications may include tools for scientific problem-solving, medical information and patient education, agricultural advisory services, multilingual content creation, programming support, small-business productivity, and privacy-focused workflow automation.

Technical Requirements

Solutions will be evaluated on a standardized laptop designed to represent the type of computer commonly available across African markets.

The reference hardware includes:

• Processor: Intel Core i5 10th–12th generation or a comparable AMD Ryzen 5 processor
• Memory: 8 GB RAM
• Graphics: Integrated graphics only, with no discrete GPU
• Storage: 256 GB SSD
• Operating System: Ubuntu 22.04 LTS
• Maximum Memory Usage: 7 GB RAM during evaluation

The language model must operate entirely offline during testing, without external APIs or network dependencies. Submissions must use compatible open-source model formats and run through the challenge’s designated evaluation environment. Participants may develop their projects using more powerful equipment, but final performance will be measured on the standard laptop.

Applicant Eligibility

The challenge is open to individuals and early-stage teams residing in eligible African countries.

Applicants must meet the following requirements:

• Team Size: Applicants may participate individually or in teams of up to three members.
• Location: Participants must reside in one of the eligible African countries listed in the official rules.
• Age: Each participant must have reached the legal age of majority in their country of residence.
• Venture Age: Projects, companies, registered entities, or organized teams must be less than 12 months old as of 16 June 2026.
• Product Stage: Solutions must be at the ideation, conceptual, early prototype, or proof-of-concept stage.
• Commercial Status: Products must not be fully commercialized or generating active monthly recurring revenue.
• Funding Limit: Teams must not have raised more than US$25,000 in external equity investment or non-dilutive grant funding.

No previous startup experience or funding history is required. However, mature products that have already been deployed commercially for an extended period are not eligible.

Submission Requirements

The challenge requires a functioning prototype rather than a proposal-only submission.

Applicants must submit:

• An open-source GitHub repository using the approved challenge template
• A detailed project report explaining the problem, constraints, technical decisions, tools, and performance results
• Benchmarks covering model speed, memory consumption, and efficiency
• Screenshots or short recordings showing the application in operation
• A video of no more than two minutes presenting the solution and the team’s development journey

Projects may use existing open-source models, libraries, and development tools, provided that all external resources are clearly acknowledged.

Evaluation Criteria

Submissions will be assessed through automated hardware testing and qualitative evaluation.

The principal assessment areas are:

• Model Accuracy and Quality: The usefulness and accuracy of the model’s responses, supported by clear technical documentation
• Performance: The model’s generation speed and responsiveness on the standard laptop
• Efficiency: The solution’s ability to operate within the required memory and hardware limits
• African Relevance: The solution’s suitability for African users, infrastructure conditions, languages, or locally relevant use cases

Projects incorporating meaningful African-language functionality, offline local data, or strong African use cases may receive additional consideration. Systems that exceed the memory limit, crash during testing, or depend on an internet connection may be disqualified.

Prizes & Program Support

The Africa Deep Tech Challenge 2026 offers a total prize pool valued at up to US$20,000, combining cash awards and technical support.

Available awards include:

• Grand Prize: US$8,000 in cash
• Second-Place Award: US$4,000 in cash
• Additional Technical Award: US$3,000 in cash
• African Use Case or Localisation Award: US$1,500 in cash
• Finalist Support: Up to US$250 in GPU cloud-computing credits for selected finalists
• Semifinalist Support: Up to US$50 in GPU credits for selected semifinalists

Winning teams may also receive scale-up support lasting three to six months. Depending on the award category, this may include technical mentorship, pilot matchmaking, legal or intellectual-property clinics, investor exposure, Venture Demo Day participation, and access to the Africa Deep Tech Foundation network.
