The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) has opened applications for the second edition of the ECOWAS Startup Awards, a regional initiative designed to identify, celebrate, and support high-impact startups contributing to innovation, digital transformation, regional integration, and sustainable economic development across West Africa. Convened by the Directorate of Private Sector and Industry of the ECOWAS Commission, the program will select 60 startups to compete for a total cash prize pool of US$65,000 and access business growth opportunities.
Application Details and Timeline
• Application Period: Applications opened on 3 August 2026 and close on 31 August 2026.
• Deadline: Applications must be submitted by 31 August 2026, 23:59 GMT+1.
• Application Portal: Applications must be submitted through the official ECOWAS Startup Awards application portal.
• Virtual Masterclasses: 21–25 September 2026.
• Physical Program: 28–30 September 2026 in Abuja, Nigeria.
• Regional Finals: 30 September 2026.
Eligibility Criteria
• Geographic Eligibility: Applicants must be citizens of an ECOWAS member state and operate a startup that is registered and based within the ECOWAS region.
• Business Maturity: Eligible startups must have been operating for at least two years.
• Product and Traction: Applicants must have a working product or service and demonstrate market traction or clear scalability potential.
• Cohort Size: A total of 60 startups from across ECOWAS member states will be selected to participate.
• Priority Sectors: Applicants must operate in one of six priority sectors: EdTech and Skills Development; FinTech; HealthTech; AgriTech and Food Systems; CleanTech, Climate and Green Innovation; or Tourism, Hospitality and TravelTech.
• Diversity: Female-led startups are particularly encouraged to apply.
• Documentation: Applicants must submit all required application information and supporting documents.
Application Process
• Step 1: Visit the official ECOWAS Startup Awards application portal and begin the application process.
• Step 2: Provide detailed information about the startup, including the business, the problem it addresses, and the solution it provides.
• Step 3: Explain what makes the product, service, or business model innovative and how it responds to an identified market need or challenge.
• Step 4: Demonstrate the team's capacity to execute the business strategy and clearly explain the startup's business model and financial viability.
• Step 5: Present evidence of market potential, scalability, social and economic impact, and alignment with relevant ECOWAS priorities.
• Step 6: Review all required information and supporting documentation before submitting the completed application by the deadline.
Selection and Assessment Criteria
Applications will be evaluated using a weighted scoring framework:
• Problem Clarity and Solution Fit: 20%
• Innovation and Originality: 20%
• Team Capacity and Execution Ability: 15%
• Market Potential and Scalability: 10%
• Business Model and Financial Viability: 10%
• Social and Economic Impact: 10%
• Alignment with ECOWAS Priorities: 10%
• Pitch, Online Voting, and Data Integrity: 5%
Program Benefits and Structure
• Virtual Masterclasses: Selected startups will participate in virtual masterclasses from 21 to 25 September 2026.
• Physical Program: Participants will proceed to an in-person program in Abuja, Nigeria, from 28 to 30 September 2026.
• Regional Finals: Finalists will pitch their businesses before an independent jury comprising industry experts, investors, and policy stakeholders on 30 September 2026.
• Cash Prizes: The top three startups will share a total prize pool of US$65,000. The winner will receive US$30,000, the first runner-up US$20,000, and the second runner-up US$15,000.
• Acceleration and Mentorship: Selected startups will gain access to a six-month post-award acceleration and mentorship program focused on business growth and investment readiness.
• Investor Access: Participants will have opportunities to connect with investors through investor deal rooms and other engagement activities.
• Regional Visibility: Startups will gain exposure across ECOWAS member states and opportunities to connect with founders, policymakers, development partners, and ecosystem stakeholders.
• Digital Tools: Participants may also receive access to digital tools, including computers, accessories, and software.
The second edition of the ECOWAS Startup Awards is convened by the Directorate of Private Sector and Industry of the ECOWAS Commission and jointly implemented by the Pan African Alliance for Small and Medium Industries (PAOSMI) and the Investment Promotion Agencies of West African States (IPAWAS). The program follows the inaugural ECOWAS Startup Awards held in Niamey, Niger, in November 2021.
Eligible startups seeking funding, regional visibility, mentorship, investor access, and opportunities to expand across West African markets are encouraged to complete and submit their applications through the official portal by 31 August 2026, 23:59 GMT+1.
