Waymo has offered a first look into the sophisticated computing system that powers its autonomous vehicles. This "brain" of the Waymo Driver is the result of a decade of co-designing hardware, sensors, and software to meet the unique demands of real-world driving. The system boasts data-center-level performance engineered for the deterministic, low-latency requirements of a vehicle operating without a human backup.


Engineered for Real-World Demands

The compute platform is built around three non-negotiable principles: responsiveness, ruggedness, and redundancy. To make real-time driving decisions, the system operates entirely onboard, processing complex data within milliseconds to ensure ultra-low latency from sensor input to action. This capability is powered by a 20-fold increase in raw compute power achieved over just eight years.

Waymo has engineered its hardware to thrive in the physical world with exceptional endurance and reliability. The system is designed to withstand constant vibration, shock, and extreme temperatures, from the heat of Phoenix to freezing Midwest winters. By integrating directly with the vehicle's liquid cooling, the compute platform sustains peak performance under any condition.

Since there is no human driver to intervene, proactive safety is achieved through a natively redundant architecture. The compute system functions like two independent engines operating in parallel, each running the full workload. If one unit experiences a fault, the other seamlessly takes over to ensure continuous and safe operation.

A Custom-Built, ML-First Architecture

The company has evolved from using off-the-shelf components to creating a highly integrated, custom system. This ML-primary architecture is optimized to run advanced neural networks with minimal latency. It is a balanced, heterogeneous system that pairs Waymo's ML technologies with best-in-class CPUs, GPUs, and accelerators for maximum efficiency.

A key component of this custom approach is a new purpose-built 5nm ASIC, an application-specific integrated circuit. This specialized chip is an ML powerhouse engineered exclusively to process, fuse, and run advanced neural networks on raw sensor data. It handles the massive influx of information from lidar, radar, and cameras in real time.

The custom ASICs alone deliver over 1,000 TOPS of machine learning performance dedicated to front-end processing.
