Water Tech Startup Metal Morph Secures £700,000 for Circular Economy Solution

UK-based water technology startup Metal Morph has successfully secured £700,000 in pre-seed funding to advance its mission of transforming water treatment plants into circular supply chains. The company develops infrastructure-as-a-service solutions to recover valuable industrial materials from municipal and industrial wastewater. This innovative approach aims to reduce waste, lower operational costs, and enhance supply chain resilience for essential resources.


A Vision for Circular Water Systems

Metal Morph's initial technology focuses on recovering aluminium and iron-based treatment chemicals that are crucial for water purification. Instead of being discharged or sent to landfill, these spent coagulants are captured and purified for reuse within the same treatment process. This closed-loop system significantly reduces the industry's reliance on primary supply chains and the environmental impact of sourcing new materials.

Addressing Industry Challenges

The funding arrives at a critical time as water utilities face mounting pressures from supply chain disruptions, stricter environmental regulations, and escalating operational costs. Founder Moletsane Mophethe, inspired by experiencing water scarcity in his childhood, aims to address these issues directly. He believes that by correctly harnessing water infrastructure, we can reshape the supply of essential chemicals and lower the cost of water production.

Proven Efficacy and Industry Adoption

The company's technology has already demonstrated significant potential through more than 50 live tests conducted across three drinking water treatment plants. These trials have shown a recovery rate of up to 90 percent for spent chemicals at 95 percent purity. The results also indicate a 26 percent reduction in coagulation-related operating costs and an 89 percent cut in emissions associated with coagulant procurement.

To further validate its solution, Metal Morph is collaborating with six major UK water utilities, which collectively represent 56 percent of the UK water market. This widespread support underscores the urgent need for innovative solutions that promote sustainability and efficiency in water management. The company also plans to expand its technology to recover standalone metals from industrial wastewater and mining tailings in the future.

Strategic Allocation of New Capital

The new capital will be instrumental in accelerating the development of Metal Morph’s resource recovery technology and expanding its industry pilots. In addition to the £700,000 pre-seed funding, the company has received a £100,000 grant from UK water regulator Ofwat. This combined financial backing will support continued validation with both water utilities and industrial partners across the country.

Looking beyond the UK, the company is actively exploring opportunities for international expansion into European markets. Metal Morph is planning potential technology demonstrations in Estonia and is engaged in discussions with the Belgian water utility Aquafin. These strategic moves are part of a broader plan to establish its circular economy model as a global standard in water treatment.
