Walapay, a global payments infrastructure provider focused on account issuance, collections, foreign exchange, and payouts, has raised US$4.6 million in a Seed funding round led by Generative Ventures. The round also drew participation from Commerce Ventures, Polygon, Verda Ventures, NGC Ventures, FGV Capital, AAF, Jsquare, Knollwood, and Big Brain Holdings. The company plans to use the capital to expand licensing, deepen banking relationships, and grow its team as it strengthens API-first cross-border payments for fintechs and financial institutions.

Solving the Last Mile Challenge

Many global payment platforms stop at correspondent banks and leave final delivery to third-party licenses and aggregator partners. A single cross-border payment can pass through four or five banks and payment service providers before it settles, adding fees, delays, and points of failure. Walapay collapses that chain into a single platform it owns end to end, with direct local rail integrations across Latin America, Africa, and Asia.

Expanding Licensing and Banking Reach

The new funding will support Walapay's efforts to broaden its licensing footprint and deepen partnerships with banks. The company also intends to grow its team as it works to bring more banks and financial institutions directly onto modern payment rails. Walapay sees this shift as a way to collapse layers of intermediation in a cross-border payments market worth an estimated US$190 trillion annually.

Platform Capabilities and Customer Traction

Walapay's platform enables fintechs and payment service providers to access instant settlement into multicurrency accounts and real-time repatriation of funds to emerging markets. Customers can also convert idle deposits into yield-generating digital dollar instruments, with yield shared back to the customer. The company already processes US$2.5 billion in annualized total payment volume, operates in more than 180 countries, and supports over 60 currencies for clients including Kast, Nuvei, and Bastion.

Founder Vision for Bridging Banking and Modern Rails

Co-Founder and CEO Tom Borgers said next-generation payment rails will become first-class financial infrastructure, but the traditional banking system is not disappearing soon. He emphasized that Walapay aims to bring both sides together seamlessly so businesses can move money globally without thinking about the underlying rails. The platform works with banking and digital asset infrastructure partners to support flexible custody models tailored to customer regulatory and operational needs.

Investor Confidence in Local Rail Ownership

Generative Ventures Managing Partner Lex Sokolin said Walapay is a rare team building the full stack itself by owning licensing and banking relationships rather than renting them. Commerce Ventures Partner Vivek Krishnamurthy noted that the platform has real local rail coverage across Latin America, Africa, and Asia, and customers have seen measurable speed and cost improvements. Both investors framed the company as addressing structural gaps in underserved parts of financial services.

Walapay's Seed round arrives as cross-border payment infrastructure faces growing demand for faster, lower-cost, and locally integrated services. The company's approach of owning the last mile rather than depending on rented licenses positions it to serve fintechs and financial institutions operating across complex regions. With US$2.5 billion in annualized total payment volume and new capital in place, Walapay aims to bring global payment volume onto rails built for modern money movement.
