Upwind, an Israeli cybersecurity unicorn focused on cloud infrastructure security, has acquired early-stage Israeli startup Aegis in a stock-based transaction valued at tens of millions of dollars. The acquisition arrives only nine months after Aegis was founded, underscoring the rapid pace of consolidation in the AI security space. Following the deal, Upwind announced the creation of Upwind AI Labs for Cybersecurity, a dedicated research and development unit aimed at emerging threats to AI systems.
Acquisition Comes Amid Rapid Valuation Growth
The acquisition was announced just weeks after Upwind secured $300 million at a valuation of approximately $3.8 billion. That funding round more than doubled the company's valuation from the $1.5 billion it reached in January when it raised $250 million. The timing highlights how quickly Upwind is converting fresh capital into strategic expansion and talent acquisition.
Aegis Founders Bring Offensive Cyber Experience
Aegis was co-founded by Omri Limor and Saar Ankonina, both veterans of the Israeli military's elite Unit 8200. The two began their careers together in offensive cyber operations before applying that mindset to the protection of AI infrastructure. Their company was specifically created to address security challenges related to AI agents and the infrastructure that supports them.
From Partnership to Acquisition
Aegis and Upwind initially formed a strategic partnership, collaborating for several months before the acquisition. Limor and Ankonina will now lead the new AI lab, combining Aegis research with Upwind's cloud security platform. The team will focus on identifying attack techniques, detecting threats, and building defensive tools for AI environments.
Initial Team and Hiring Plans
The new lab will launch with twelve developers and researchers drawn from both Aegis and Upwind. Upwind plans to expand the team to roughly twenty-five employees within three months and eventually to about thirty-five. This growth signals a serious commitment to AI security research rather than a purely symbolic integration.
Upwind's Cloud Security Foundation
Upwind was founded in 2022 by CEO Amiram Shachar and partners from Spot.io, a cloud software company acquired by NetApp for $450 million. Its platform analyzes threats in cloud environments in real time instead of relying mainly on retrospective static scans. That approach helps security teams prioritize risks and reduce false-positive alerts.
Recent Executive Addition and Investor Base
The company recently appointed Omer Grossman, a former Mamram commander and CyberArk senior executive, as chief business officer. Upwind has raised more than $700 million since inception, with investors including Bessemer Venture Partners, TCV, Cyberstarts, Greylock, Craft Ventures, Salesforce Ventures, and others. This broad investor base reflects confidence in the company's cloud and AI security roadmap.
By acquiring Aegis and launching Upwind AI Labs for Cybersecurity, Upwind is extending its reach from conventional cloud infrastructure into the rapidly evolving domain of AI agent security. The move brings experienced Unit 8200 founders and specialized research talent into a company that has already demonstrated strong fundraising momentum. As AI-driven workflows become more common in enterprise environments, the acquisition positions Upwind to address a critical and growing security gap.
