Munich-based startup tozero has officially launched its industrial demonstration plant, a pioneering facility designed to recycle lithium-ion batteries at scale. Located in Bavaria, the plant aims to establish a domestic supply of critical materials like lithium and graphite for Europe. This initiative directly addresses the continent's significant reliance on foreign imports and strengthens its position in the global energy transition.


A Technological Leap in Battery Recycling

Situated at the Chemical Park Gendorf, the facility was commissioned in a remarkable six-month timeframe, showcasing an unprecedented pace in the industry. It is capable of processing over 1,500 tonnes of battery waste annually, yielding more than 100 tonnes of high-purity lithium carbonate. This launch marks a critical transition for tozero, moving from successful pilot projects to validated industrial-scale operations.

The company utilizes a proprietary acid-free hydrometallurgical process, which distinguishes it from conventional recycling methods that often lose valuable materials. This innovative single-cycle system effectively recovers not only lithium but also graphite and a nickel-cobalt mix. The resulting materials are pure enough to be directly reintegrated into the battery manufacturing supply chain without further refinement.

Addressing Europe's Strategic Dependency

The timing of this launch is geopolitically significant, as Europe remains heavily dependent on external sources for battery components, particularly China's control over graphite. By creating a domestic source of recycled materials, tozero's plant represents a tangible step toward European resource sovereignty. This move helps to de-risk the supply chain for the continent's burgeoning electric vehicle and energy storage industries.

This development aligns perfectly with the European Union's Critical Raw Materials Act, which mandates that 25% of supply must originate from recycling. With global lithium demand projected to quadruple by 2030, recycling is no longer optional but essential for meeting future needs. Tozero's "miner of tomorrow" approach is positioned to help bridge the anticipated global supply gap sustainably.

Proven Milestones and Future Ambitions

Founded in 2022, tozero has already achieved significant commercial milestones, including becoming the first in Europe to deliver recycled lithium to customers in 2024. The company has also successfully qualified its recycled graphite for use in new batteries and completed pilots with automotive leaders like BMW. Its process consistently demonstrates a lithium recovery rate exceeding 80%, already meeting the EU's 2031 regulatory target.

The Gendorf plant serves as a crucial blueprint for the company's long-term vision of a full-scale commercial facility. Planned for 2030, this future plant aims to process 45,000 tonnes of battery waste annually. This expansion will significantly scale up the production of essential materials, further solidifying Europe's domestic battery ecosystem.
