Thrixel, an AI-native 3D creation platform founded by University of Chicago professor Rana Hanocka, announced on October 8, 2026, that it has publicly launched with US$3 million in inception funding from Sierra Ventures and other investors. The company introduces part-based 3D generation and programmatic control designed for AI-driven pipelines and interactive applications. Its platform aims to make structured 3D asset creation faster and more accessible for developers, studios, and enterprises.

A New Approach to 3D Asset Creation

Traditional 3D content production often remains slow, expensive, and dependent on highly specialized tools. Thrixel addresses this challenge with a part-aware generative architecture that creates structured assets with individually named and identifiable components. For example, a generated car arrives with its wheels, doors, and chassis as separate parts that can be animated or swapped independently.

Programmatic Control for Creators

The platform combines vision language models, agentic pipelines, generative diffusion, and optimization techniques, with each technology mapped to a discrete step in the 3D modeling pipeline. Users can apply the full workflow or use specific steps to refine an existing model. Creators can also manipulate individual parts directly through code and assemble complex assets from components for existing 3D workflows.

Introducing Build World

Alongside its core platform, Thrixel is introducing Build World, an agentic workflow that turns ideas into interactive 3D experiences. Build World allows creators to work with an AI coding agent that generates needed 3D content while writing underlying logic and code. The workflow supports playable experiences in Roblox, Three.js, Unity, and Unreal Engine.

Industry Validation and Partnerships

Thrixel is actively engaging with partners across game development, interactive media, robotics, and simulation. Alex Seropian, Founder and CEO of Look North World and Founder of Bungie, described Thrixel as the first AI 3D platform he has used that enables iterative crafting and programmatic asset use. He added that it is a natural extension of existing workflows.

Research Roots and Leadership

Thrixel grew out of years of research at the intersection of AI and computer graphics led by Rana Hanocka, who is also an Assistant Professor of Computer Science at the University of Chicago. Her work laid key foundations for 3D AI through MeshCNN, a pioneering framework for deep learning on meshes, and Text2Mesh, an early milestone in text-driven 3D manipulation. Hanocka is joined by a founding engineering team of longtime research collaborators who have published extensively across computer graphics and vision.

Integration with Real-Time Engines

The company pairs technical depth with close collaboration with users, working directly with developers, studios, and enterprises to understand their workflows and improve the platform. Thrixel describes its technology as a 3D creation engine built to power the agentic world by producing structured assets that an LLM can animate, add logic to, and place in scenes. Its architecture connects with professional pipelines and major engines including Unreal Engine, Unity, Three.js, and Roblox.

With US$3 million in inception funding, Thrixel is positioning itself to address a gap in AI-generated 3D content by offering structure and programmatic control rather than static models. The company's focus on part-based generation, agentic workflows, and integration with widely used engines could appeal to game developers and simulation teams seeking scalable asset pipelines. As AI continues to reshape creative tools, Thrixel aims to make 3D creation more accessible and ready for autonomous systems.
