Homegrown specialty coffee chain Third Wave Coffee has raised Rs 408 crore, or approximately $43 million, in a Series D funding round led by existing backer WestBridge Capital. The round includes a combination of primary and secondary capital, with participation from Creagis and several undisclosed angel investors. The company announced the capital infusion on Monday as part of its next phase of growth.

Funding Structure and Investor Confidence

Third Wave Coffee did not disclose the split between primary and secondary components or the identities of selling shareholders. WestBridge Capital, which led the round, has been a long-term investor in the company, having previously backed its Series B and Series C rounds. Creagis also participated in the latest financing, reinforcing existing investor support for the quick-service coffee chain.

Expansion Plans Across Existing and New Markets

The company currently operates more than 240 cafes across India and expects to reach 320 outlets by the end of the current financial year. It is also preparing to enter eight new geographies by September, including potential markets in eastern India such as Guwahati, Ranchi, Patna, and Bhubaneswar. Over the past year, Third Wave Coffee has already added Ahmedabad, Mangalore, Agra, and Kolkata to its footprint.

Desserts and Menu Diversification

A portion of the primary capital will be used to scale Third Rush Desserts, the dessert segment launched earlier this year. The chain plans to strengthen its ability to serve a wider range of foods beyond coffee. This move aligns with its broader strategy to improve unit economics, strengthen customer experience, and support sustainable growth.

Leadership Commentary and Strategic Vision

Chief Executive Officer Rajat Luthra said the company's vision is to add 100 new cafes every year, reflecting the significant opportunity it sees ahead. He noted that the fundraise will support accelerated expansion while strengthening new categories such as desserts. Luthra also emphasized a continued focus on sustainable scaling, healthy store payback economics and consistent customer experience.

Investor Outlook on the Coffee Market

Sandeep Singhal, cofounder and managing partner of WestBridge Capital, said coffee is becoming an increasingly important consumer category in India. He noted that Third Wave Coffee has built a strong position through its relentless focus on quality and execution. The investor's participation signals confidence in the chain's long-term growth potential.

Company Background and Financial Performance

Third Wave Coffee was founded in 2016 by Ayush Bathwal, Anirudh Sharma and Sushant Goel, and it operates quick-service cafes in cities including Bengaluru, Mumbai, Delhi, Gurugram, Pune, Hyderabad and Noida. The company reported operating revenue of Rs 285 crore in the 2024-25 financial year, while its net loss narrowed to Rs 94 crore. The latest round brings its total disclosed funding to about $105 million.

Market Context and Next Steps

The funding arrives nearly three years after Third Wave Coffee's Series C round, in which Creagis led a $35 million investment. Since then, the company has expanded its presence across major metropolitan areas and newer cities. The fresh capital is expected to support sustained network growth, higher store density, and deeper penetration amid rising coffee consumption in India.

Third Wave Coffee's $43 million Series D round marks a significant milestone in its expansion journey, backed by familiar institutional investors. The company is prioritizing market density, new geographies, and menu innovation while aiming for 320 cafes by fiscal year end. With a stronger financial base and a clear growth roadmap, it is positioned to deepen its footprint in India's competitive specialty coffee market.
