Terra Industries, a company focused on autonomous systems that protect critical infrastructure, has led a $1 million pre-seed funding round in Aeon, a Nigerian cybersecurity firm building sovereign cyber defense for Africa and the Global South. Olugbenga Agboola, co-founder and chief executive officer of Flutterwave, participated through his fund Resilience17 alongside other investors. The investment extends Terra's mission from physical asset protection to the digital systems that run critical operations.

Expanding Protection from Physical to Digital Assets

Terra has historically focused on autonomous systems designed to safeguard critical infrastructure that depends on networks, software, and data. The company now views cybersecurity as the next frontier of defense, especially as operators face threats that cross physical and digital boundaries. This partnership extends Terra's existing security mission into the cyber domain.

Africa's Escalating Cyber Threat

Cyberattacks across Africa are increasing in both volume and sophistication, placing intense pressure on finance, healthcare, energy, and government sectors. According to INTERPOL, cyber incidents on the continent have caused more than $3 billion in losses since 2019. Cybercrime now accounts for more than 30 percent of all reported crime in West and East Africa, while hostile actors use artificial intelligence to accelerate and scale their operations.

A Unified Platform for Security Teams

Aeon is developing a cyber defense product suite that secures networks and data while monitoring and remediating vulnerabilities across code, cloud, and endpoints. The platform gives security teams one view of their exposure and one place to act when threats emerge. Samuel Ogbonyomi, co-founder and chief executive officer of Aeon, said many operators had a dozen security tools but no single view of their exposure, and attackers move across all of those systems at once.

Investor Backing and Market Potential

The participation of Olugbenga Agboola through Resilience17 highlights the growing interest among African technology leaders in cybersecurity infrastructure. Investors are responding to a clear market need as digital adoption accelerates across finance, government, and essential services. Aeon's focus on sovereign cyber defense positions it to serve customers that require greater control over their security operations.

A Joint Venture for Global South Security

Following a successful pilot earlier this year, Terra and Aeon have formed a commercial joint venture to deploy Aeon's cyber defense technology across military and commercial operations. The two companies will co-execute contracts for government and corporate organizations across the Global South, with Terra protecting physical assets and Aeon protecting digital assets. Customers working with Terra will be able to secure both their physical infrastructure and the digital systems behind it through a single partnership.

Building Sovereign Cyber Infrastructure

Aeon's ambition is to become a sovereign cyber defense layer for the Global South, allowing financial institutions, large corporations, governments, and militaries to run their cyber operations on its infrastructure. Terra Industries chief executive officer Nathan Nwachuku said the goal is for Terra to handle physical security while Aeon handles digital and cyber security. The collaboration aligns with a broader need for locally controlled cybersecurity capabilities in emerging markets.

By combining Terra's physical security expertise with Aeon's cyber defense platform, the partnership aims to create a comprehensive security offering for critical infrastructure operators. The $1 million pre-seed investment provides early capital for Aeon to advance its product suite and expand its reach across Africa and the Global South. This collaboration signals growing investor confidence in African cybersecurity startups and the importance of protecting digital infrastructure in emerging markets.
