Swedish defence startup SWEBAL has successfully secured €30 million in a strategic funding round to construct a new TNT production facility. Located in Nora, Sweden, this plant will be the first of its kind built in Europe since the end of the Cold War. The initiative aims to address critical ammunition shortages and bolster the continent's defence manufacturing capabilities.
Addressing a Critical Defence Shortage
The urgency for domestic energetic material production has grown amid ongoing geopolitical conflicts, such as the war in Ukraine. These events have rapidly depleted ammunition stockpiles and exposed significant vulnerabilities within European supply chains. Consequently, there is a pressing need for the continent to reduce its reliance on foreign imports for essential defence components.
Currently, Europe's TNT production capacity is severely limited, with Poland’s Nitro-Chem being one of the few major NATO-aligned suppliers. Much of its output is already allocated through long-term contracts, forcing many manufacturers to depend on imports. This dependency creates considerable geopolitical risks and the potential for disruptive delivery delays for crucial armaments.
Strategic Investment and Vision
The funding round attracted a group of high-profile Swedish investors, signaling strong confidence in the project's mission. Backers include former Chief of Army Major General (ret) Karl Engelbrektson, entrepreneur Pär Svärdson, and EQT co-founder Thomas von Koch. Their collective investment highlights the strategic importance of re-establishing a robust domestic defence industry in Sweden.
According to CEO Joakim Sjöblom, this investment arrives at a pivotal moment for European security and defence. He emphasized that governments are expanding military production in response to persistent ammunition shortages and heightened global tensions. SWEBAL's new facility is designed to directly meet this demand by supplying explosives to manufacturers across the continent.
Facility Details and Production Goals
The planned facility in Nora has already achieved key regulatory milestones, including environmental permits and an approved development plan. This progress clears the way for construction to advance on schedule, marking the return of TNT production to Sweden since the 1990s. The project is now fully financed, ensuring its completion and future operational readiness.
Once operational in 2028, the plant is set to produce over 4,000 tonnes of TNT annually. It will run continuously, utilizing raw materials and machinery sourced from within Europe to minimize external dependencies. This output will supply the explosives needed for artillery shells, drone munitions, and other critical armaments.
