Swedfund, Sweden's development finance institution, has announced a significant $17.7 Million investment in the Hummingbirds Gondwana platform. This capital injection is part of a larger collaborative effort to scale up nature-based climate solutions across Africa. The funding aims to address a critical gap in financing for projects that restore ecosystems and support sustainable community development.

Addressing a Critical Investment Gap

According toSwedfund's CEO, Maria Håkansson, nature-centered approaches are a vital but historically underfinanced component of the global climate transition. This investment marks the institution's inaugural step into this space, guided by a commitment to long-term impact and sustainable business models. The initiative seeks to prove that environmental projects can deliver both ecological benefits and financial viability.

Swedfund's contribution is part of a larger financing round totaling approximately $60 million for the Gondwana platform. The institution joins other prominent development financiers, including Proparco and British International Investment, in this strategic partnership. This collaborative effort is further bolstered by an EU guarantee under the EFSD+ Carbon Sinks program, designed to mitigate risks and attract capital to climate-focused nature projects.

A Multifaceted Approach to Climate Action

The Gondwana platform will channel the new funds into a diverse portfolio of environmental initiatives across the African continent. Key activities will include the conservation of existing forests, extensive reforestation programs, and the restoration of vital coastal mangrove ecosystems. The platform will also promote agroforestry practices, which integrate trees with agricultural landscapes to enhance sustainability and productivity.

Beyond forestry, the investment will also support the expansion of clean cooking solutions for local communities. These initiatives are crucial for reducing dependency on traditional fuel sources like firewood, which directly eases pressure on natural forest resources. By providing cleaner alternatives, the platform contributes to both environmental preservation and improved public health in rural areas.

Fostering Social and Environmental Co-Benefits

This investment strategy is designed to deliver multiple interconnected benefits beyond simple carbon mitigation. As noted by Swedfund’s Energy and Climate team, these projects simultaneously protect biodiversity, support climate action, and generate significant social gains. The approach particularly empowers women and rural populations by creating new income opportunities and strengthening community resilience.

The platform is an initiative of Hummingbirds, a Paris-based, female-led developer specializing in community-driven nature projects. The organization works in close partnership with local actors to implement solutions that protect ecosystems and enhance community well-being. Its global presence and focus on grassroots collaboration ensure that projects are tailored to local needs and contexts.

This $17.7 Million investment from Swedfund represents a significant endorsement of nature-based solutions as a cornerstone of effective climate strategy. The collaborative financing model, backed by international partners and an EU guarantee, sets a powerful precedent for mobilizing capital towards sustainable development. Ultimately, the initiative underscores a growing recognition that environmental health and human prosperity are inextricably linked.
