European defence integrator STV Group and UK cybersecurity firm Post-Quantum have announced the successful testing of the world’s first quantum-resilient drones. This landmark achievement addresses the urgent need to secure unmanned aerial systems against future cyber threats from quantum computers. The collaboration marks a significant step forward in future-proofing military communications for allied nations.

The Quantum Threat to Modern Defence

Modern military operations rely heavily on drones, which must operate in contested environments with jamming and signal interception. A growing concern is the "Harvest Now, Decrypt Later" strategy, where adversaries collect encrypted data to break with future quantum computers. Protecting drone communications against this long-term threat has become an immediate and critical requirement for defence agencies.

A Strategic Partnership for Advanced Security

To counter these threats, STV Group has partnered with Post-Quantum, combining combat-proven drone technology with patented cryptographic solutions. The collaboration leverages STV’s operational unmanned systems with Post-Quantum’s expertise in secure radio technology and post-quantum cryptography. This synergy aims to deliver a complete, sovereign unmanned operations system with next-generation security built-in from the ground up.

The new quantum-safe architecture was recently validated through successful trials at STV’s weapons testing facility in the Czech Republic. This milestone is particularly noteworthy as STV can deploy its drone solutions directly into operational theaters without further certification. The successful test confirms the system's readiness for real-world application in high-stakes environments.

Breakthrough Deployment of Classic McEliece

The platform is secured by Classic McEliece, a post-quantum algorithm co-invented by Post-Quantum's team with a nearly 50-year security track record. This partnership marks its first-ever airborne deployment, overcoming previous assumptions that its large key size was impractical for contested communications. Its tiny ciphertexts and fast encryption make it ideal for protecting sensitive ISR data from drones.

According to company leadership, this innovation provides the strongest available future-proof cryptography engineered for battlefield realities. Rikky Hasan, CEO of Post-Quantum, noted they proved assumptions about the algorithm wrong, making it a prime choice for protecting drone ISR. STV Group CEO Dr. Pavel Kudrhalt emphasized that in contested zones like Ukraine, such security is non-negotiable.

Future Integration and Multi-Domain Capability

Following the successful trials, the companies will begin a phased integration of the platform across European and allied defence programs. The underlying security architecture is designed for multi-domain operations, enabling the same quantum-resilient layer to support ground, maritime, and subsurface platforms. This versatility provides a comprehensive solution for securing autonomous systems across all branches of modern defence.

The collaboration between STV Group and Post-Quantum establishes a new benchmark for security in the rapidly evolving field of unmanned systems. By proactively integrating quantum-resistant cryptography, this initiative provides a critical safeguard for sensitive military operations against both current and future cyber threats. This forward-thinking approach ensures that allied defence capabilities remain secure and effective in the impending quantum era.
