Swiss space startup Stellar Alpina has successfully secured CHF 3.5 million in a pre-seed funding round led by Founderful. The Zurich-based company is developing advanced rotating detonation rocket engines (RDREs) to revolutionize in-space mobility. This investment follows the company's historic achievement of completing Europe's first commercial RDRE hotfire campaign just 82 days after its founding.

Addressing the Next Frontier in Space Logistics

As the cost of launching payloads into orbit continues to decline, a new challenge has emerged in the space economy. The ability to efficiently move, service, and reposition assets after launch is now a primary constraint for satellite operators. Existing propulsion architectures, which have seen little innovation in decades, are ill-suited for the demands of this dynamic environment.

Pioneering Detonation-Based Propulsion

Stellar Alpina is tackling this challenge with its compact and highly efficient rotating detonation rocket engines. This technology offers a significant performance improvement over conventional systems, enabling faster and more capable movement between orbits. The company validated its approach with "Engine 0," which successfully demonstrated stable detonation waves during its initial test campaign.

The company achieved this critical milestone at an unprecedented pace, conducting a full engine test campaign within three months of incorporation. This included eight successful detonative hotfires, marking a first for a commercial entity in Europe. This rapid validation of their deep-tech concept showcases the team's exceptional execution capabilities and engineering agility.

A Culture of Rapid Iteration and Innovation

The company's founding team, with roots in the Academic Spaceflight Initiative Switzerland (ARIS), champions a philosophy of rapid, iterative development. Their approach involves building hardware, testing it to its limits, learning from failures, and quickly improving the design. This agile methodology stands in stark contrast to the traditionally slow development cycles common in the aerospace industry.

Investor Confidence and Future Trajectory

The CHF 3.5 million funding round, led by Swiss pre-seed venture fund Founderful, signals strong investor confidence in Stellar Alpina's vision. The round also saw participation from deep-tech firm LP&E and other strategic investors impressed by the team's progress. Alex Stöckl of Founderful noted that achieving hotfire in under three months demonstrates how effectively the team operates.

This new capital will be instrumental in accelerating the company's development roadmap and scaling its operations. The funds are earmarked for extensive new hotfire campaigns across various engine configurations and the build-out of larger test infrastructure. Ultimately, this investment will propel the development of their first flight-ready engine for the growing in-space mobility market.

With this significant pre-seed funding and proven technological milestones, Stellar Alpina is well-positioned to become a key player in the next phase of the space economy. The company's innovative RDRE technology promises to unlock new capabilities for orbital transfers, satellite servicing, and deep-space missions. As the industry moves beyond simple orbital access, Stellar Alpina's work will be crucial in building the infrastructure for mobility between worlds.
