Jem, a South African workforce management platform, has secured $8.4 million in a Series A funding round led by fintech investor Quona Capital. The company provides services for deskless teams via WhatsApp, addressing a historically underserved market segment. This new capital will be used to accelerate the company's growth and enhance its product offerings.

From Financial Wellness to Full-Stack Management

Founded in 2020 as SmartWage, the company initially focused on providing earned wage access to combat predatory payday lending. This service allowed employees to draw wages they had already earned through a simple WhatsApp interface. The goal was to offer a fair and accessible alternative for workers facing cash flow challenges.

After rebranding to Jem in 2022, the platform expanded its scope significantly beyond its initial offering. It evolved into a comprehensive workforce management tool covering payslips, onboarding, leave management, and internal communications. This strategic shift transformed Jem into an all-in-one solution for employers managing frontline staff.

Impressive Growth and Market Adoption

Jem has demonstrated significant market traction, now serving over 250,000 employees across more than 200 companies. Its client roster includes major industry brands such as Servest, KFC, Edgars, and Illovo. This widespread adoption highlights the platform's effectiveness in diverse operational environments and its appeal to large-scale employers.

Investor confidence is bolstered by the company's strong financial performance and customer loyalty. According to Quona Capital, Jem has achieved over 100 percent year-on-year growth in recurring revenue and maintains a net revenue retention rate of approximately 120 percent. These metrics, coupled with negligible customer churn, signal a robust and sustainable business model.

Product Innovation and Strategic Vision

The company recently launched Jem 2.0, an upgraded employer hub designed to replace the patchwork of legacy systems many businesses rely on. CEO Simon Ellis stated that Jem aims to be the single platform where employers can manage all aspects of their teams. This consolidation simplifies operations and provides deeper workforce insights than ever before.

The new platform introduces features like time-and-attendance tracking, credit scores, and an employee assistance program. Additional tools, including rostering and a learning management system, are currently in beta testing. Jem also offers a secure integration that allows employers to utilize its tools within their existing AI systems.

Investor Confidence in a Key Market

Lead investor Quona Capital was drawn to Jem's unique model, which combines essential software with embedded financial services. Venture Partner Johan Bosini described the WhatsApp-based platform as "important infrastructure" for managing and supporting workforces. This approach effectively reaches a user base that is largely inaccessible to traditional financial service providers.

The funding round also included participation from University Technology Fund, E4E, and Next176/FutureGrowth, alongside prominent angel investors. This broad support reflects growing interest in technology solutions for Africa's deskless workforce. The use of WhatsApp as a distribution channel is a key differentiator, ensuring high engagement and usability.

This $8.4 million investment marks a significant milestone for Jem, validating its innovative approach to workforce management. The capital will empower the company to further develop its platform and expand its reach across the continent. Jem is well-positioned to become a critical operational layer between employers and their frontline teams.
