SAP to Acquire Tabular Foundation Model Pioneer Prior Labs

SAP SE has announced a definitive agreement to acquire Prior Labs, a pioneer in Tabular Foundation Models (TFMs), in a strategic move to dominate the enterprise AI landscape. This acquisition builds on SAP's early work with its own SAP-RPT-1 model and incorporates one of the world's foremost TFM research teams into its fold. SAP has committed to investing over €1 billion over the next four years to develop Prior Labs into a leading global AI research entity.


A Strategic Shift to Structured Data AI

The acquisition highlights a crucial distinction in the field of artificial intelligence, moving beyond the capabilities of large language models (LLMs). While LLMs excel at processing text, they often fall short when analyzing structured business data, struggling with tables, numbers, and statistics. TFMs, in contrast, are specifically designed to interpret this tabular data, enabling highly accurate predictions for critical business outcomes like supplier risk and customer churn.

Philipp Herzig, SAP's CTO, emphasized that the most significant opportunity in enterprise AI lies with structured data, which forms the backbone of global business operations. He noted that combining Prior Labs' advanced model research with SAP's extensive enterprise data and customer base will position the company to lead this new category. This strategic focus aims to unlock the vast, untapped potential held within corporate databases and spreadsheets.

Pioneering Technology and Expertise

Prior Labs brings a formidable reputation and proven technology to the partnership, led by CEO Frank Hutter and a team of world-class researchers. Their model, TabPFN-2.6, is the top performer on the TabArena benchmark, matching the accuracy of complex automated machine learning pipelines instantly. This efficiency drastically reduces the complexity and time required to generate reliable business predictions from raw data.

The company's open-source tool, TabPFN, has already been downloaded over three million times, fostering a vibrant developer community that SAP has pledged to continue supporting. The lab's scientific advisory board will include luminaries such as Yann LeCun and Bernhard Schölkopf, ensuring it remains at the forefront of AI research. Frank Hutter stated that joining SAP provides the resources and reach necessary to realize the full potential of tabular AI.

Following the acquisition's close, Prior Labs will operate as an independent unit within the SAP ecosystem to maintain its research agility and velocity.
