Meanwhile, the first life insurer licensed to operate entirely in Bitcoin, has raised US$37.5 million in new funding from its existing investors. The round was led by Bain Capital Crypto and included Haun Ventures, Framework Ventures, Pantera Capital, Apollo, Northwestern Mutual Future Ventures, and Morgan Creek Digital. With this latest capital, the company has now raised more than US$180 million, and its backers include Sam Altman.
International Demand Fuels Growth
The funding follows a sharp increase in international demand for the company's Bitcoin life insurance policies, particularly in Asia, Europe, and the Middle East amid broader macroeconomic instability. In early 2026, Meanwhile launched BTC Life 1-Pay, a single-premium whole life policy built for high-net-worth clients outside the United States. It is the company's second product line after BTC 10-Pay, which is designed specifically for US taxpayers.
Broker Partnerships Expand Distribution
As the company eyes further international growth, it has signed 15 brokers serving wealthy families since the launch, including in the insurance hubs of Singapore, Hong Kong, the UAE, and Switzerland. Those broker partners include Lioner, an insurance, trust, and family office group with offices in Hong Kong, Singapore, and Zurich, and Apeiron Group, a marketplace for high-net-worth life insurance. Justin Man, CEO of Apeiron Group, said more high-net-worth clients are asking not just how to hold Bitcoin but how to plan around it and transfer that wealth to the next generation.
Policy Mechanics and Wealth Transfer
BTC Life 1-Pay is intended for families who hold some of their wealth in Bitcoin. A client pays one premium in Bitcoin and receives a guaranteed death benefit in Bitcoin for life, with the policy value growing in Bitcoin. After the first year, the owner can borrow up to 90% of the policy value with no repayment schedule and no margin calls, while policies can be owned by individuals, trusts, or companies for succession and estate planning.
Regulatory Foundation and Company Performance
Meanwhile Insurance Bitcoin (Bermuda) Limited holds the first Class IILT license granted by the Bermuda Monetary Authority, received in July 2024 after two years in the regulator's sandbox. Its balance sheet, reserves, and audited financial statements are all denominated in Bitcoin, and all policyholder Bitcoin is held with regulated institutional custodians. Net long-term underwriting income has already passed last year's total and is on track to more than double in 2026, according to the company.
Leadership Sees a Turning Point
Zac Townsend, co-founder and CEO of Meanwhile, said wealthy families around the world already hold Bitcoin but have lacked a regulated way to pass it on, and brokers came to the company because their clients kept asking. Stefan Cohen, Partner at Bain Capital Crypto, said the company owns every layer of a regulated life insurer and builds it like an AI-enabled startup. The growth this year proves the model, he added, and Bain Capital Crypto is glad to back the team again.
The new funding positions Meanwhile to expand its Bitcoin-denominated life insurance offering as digital assets become a more established part of international wealth planning. With a licensed Bermuda-based carrier, a growing broker network, and products tailored to both US and non-US clients, the company is targeting a market where life insurance and Bitcoin intersect. Its record underwriting income suggests that high-net-worth families are increasingly seeking regulated ways to preserve and transfer Bitcoin wealth across generations.
