Egyptian teleradiology startup Rology has entered into a strategic partnership with Japan’s University of Hyogo, marking a significant milestone in global academic-industry collaboration in healthcare technology. The agreement, formalized through a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), aims to foster joint research and development efforts to improve diagnostic radiology through artificial intelligence (AI). This move underscores both parties’ commitment to revolutionizing the radiology ecosystem on a global scale.

Bridging Academic Research and Clinical Innovation

The partnership unites Rology’s practical experience in remote radiology services with the University of Hyogo’s academic strength in information science. Together, they aim to enhance radiological diagnostic workflows by co-developing clinically viable AI tools and methodologies. The collaboration is designed not only to advance technical innovation but also to create meaningful channels for knowledge exchange between academia and industry.

Rology’s Origins and Impact in Radiology

Founded in October 2017 by Amr Abodraiaa, Moaaz Hossam, Mahmoud Eldefrawy, and Bassam Khallaf, Rology was established to address the acute global shortage of radiologists. The startup’s cloud-based platform enables hospitals and radiologists to connect seamlessly, with intelligent matchmaking capabilities that ensure timely and efficient patient diagnoses. Rology’s technology requires no setup costs and empowers radiologists to work remotely from anywhere with a laptop and internet connection.

Expansion into the Gulf and Growing Momentum

In 2022, Rology secured a pre-Series A round of funding, accelerating its growth and enabling strategic regional expansion. The company made a significant entry into Saudi Arabia in 2023 through the acquisition of Arkan United, tapping into the largest healthcare market in the Middle East. This growth trajectory highlights Rology’s increasing influence in the digital healthcare landscape across the MENA region.

Objectives of the R&D Collaboration

The newly signed MoU with the Graduate School of Information Science at the University of Hyogo sets the stage for a robust research pipeline focused on AI-driven diagnostics. The partnership aims to validate clinical tools, enhance diagnostic precision, and reduce costs by optimizing radiological processes through innovation. Both parties are committed to translating advanced research into real-world healthcare solutions that are accessible and scalable.

Statements from Key Stakeholders

Professor Essam Rashed of the University of Hyogo emphasized the importance of this collaboration in advancing AI-supported radiological diagnostics and fostering mutual learning. He noted that the partnership would promote not only technological development but also long-term academic-industry cooperation and global health impact. Moaaz Hossam, Chief Business Officer and co-founder of Rology, echoed this sentiment, calling the initiative a pivotal step in bridging research and clinical practice through international collaboration.

The alliance between Rology and the University of Hyogo reflects a shared vision of a future where AI enhances access to high-quality, affordable healthcare. By bringing together expertise from two continents, the partnership stands to accelerate innovation and set new standards in radiological care. As Rology continues its mission to transform healthcare delivery, this landmark deal positions it as a leader in the convergence of technology, research, and patient-centered care.
