Finnish satellite manufacturer ReOrbit has secured €4.6 million in funding from Business Finland to advance its innovative OrbitCloud program. This initiative aims to develop a private satellite network that combines direct-to-device connectivity with artificial intelligence processing directly in space. The grant marks the initial phase of a project projected to exceed €40 million, targeting critical defense and industrial applications.
A New Paradigm in Satellite Communication
Traditional satellite systems often face delays and vulnerabilities due to their reliance on ground stations for data processing. ReOrbit’s OrbitCloud network circumvents this by establishing direct links to drones and mobile devices using 3GPP Non-Terrestrial Network standards. This architecture provides resilient and privately controlled communications for operators in remote or infrastructure-poor environments.
The program's core innovation lies in its orbital AI inference capabilities, creating a space-based edge computing network. Instead of transmitting raw data, satellites process information onboard using a mesh of interconnected processors. This system delivers real-time, actionable intelligence directly to end-users, enhancing both speed and security.

The €4.6 million grant represents a strategic investment and risk-sharing partnership from Business Finland. Kimmo Kanto, a director at the organization, stated that supporting ambitious companies like ReOrbit strengthens Finland's critical telecommunications capabilities. This funding is intended to accelerate new technologies and bolster the nation's global competitiveness.
ReOrbit CEO and Founder, Sethu Saveda Suvanam, emphasized that OrbitCloud marks a fundamental shift in how satellite infrastructure delivers intelligence. He explained that the technology places real-time data directly into the hands of operators without depending on terrestrial systems. This capability is crucial as demand for sovereign satellite solutions grows across Europe.
Ambitious Growth and Market Positioning
This funding follows a period of significant momentum for the Helsinki-based company, founded in 2019. In March, ReOrbit secured a €150 million contract with asset-financing firm SLI for two small geostationary satellites. This deal validated its hardware capabilities and supports its ambitious goal of achieving €1 billion in sales within four years.
To meet rising global demand for secure satellite infrastructure, ReOrbit is aggressively expanding its operations. The company plans to grow its team from approximately 90 employees to over 200 by the end of 2026. This expansion reflects the increasing need for independent communication systems for both military and industrial clients.
In the direct-to-device market, ReOrbit faces competition from established players like AST SpaceMobile and Lynk Global. However, its unique integration of onboard AI processing serves as a key differentiator in a crowded field. The success of this technology could position the company as a leader in next-generation satellite services.
