Reactiv, a Toronto-based mobile commerce platform founded in 2023 by former Shopify employees, has acquired New York-based competitor Kin Commerce. The acquisition expands Reactiv's client portfolio and adds social engagement capabilities to its AI-powered mobile app platform. The deal closed in early September and was accompanied by a previously undisclosed Seed extension round that brought the company's total external funding to approximately US$12 million.

Acquisition Details and Strategic Fit

Reactiv co-founder and chief operating officer Zack Elias said the acquisition was opportunistic and was not part of the company's original plans for the year. Kin Commerce was founded in 2022 by former Meta employees, and its leadership team was shifting focus to a new AI marketing startup. Reactiv took over Kin's technology, intellectual property, customer relationships, and one engineer, bringing its headcount to 31 employees.

The purchase price was not disclosed, but the cash-upfront transaction gives Reactiv immediate access to major retail brands such as Steve Madden and Chubbies. Kin Commerce differentiates itself through social media style features, including personalized For You pages, forums, and Instagram integrations. Reactiv plans to migrate those social capabilities into its own platform over the longer term.

Reactiv's flagship product includes a Clips feature that places a segment of a retailer's app within a shopper's phone from an advertisement. Kin's strength lies in deeper social functionality that drives customer engagement and sales conversion. Elias noted that the acquisition serves as a growth anchor, particularly because it adds strategic brands such as Steve Madden's global stores.

Funding and Market Momentum

The acquisition follows a previously undisclosed US$6 million Seed extension round, equivalent to about 8.5 million Canadian dollars, which closed earlier this year. That injection brought Reactiv's total external funding to approximately US$12 million since its launch. The company has not specified how much of that capital was allocated to the Kin Commerce acquisition.

Reactiv is currently maintaining Kin as a separate product ahead of the Black Friday shopping season. Elias described the period as the e-commerce world's Super Bowl and said no company wants to disrupt its systems before that event ends. After Black Friday, Reactiv will begin integrating the two platforms into a single offering.

The company's organic growth has accelerated over the past year as larger brands adopt its commerce platform. Reactiv is powering upcoming mobile apps for Indigo and Browns Shoes, and it has gained traction with major sports teams. Elias said the broader market is seeing large retailers move away from custom web and app development toward specialized commerce platforms.

Elias pointed to recent migrations by Reitmans and Canada Goose to Shopify as examples of that shift. He explained that brands seek platforms with comparable capability but lower total cost of ownership and easier management. Reactiv's pitch to larger clients emphasizes a similar balance of performance and simplicity.

The Kin Commerce acquisition positions Reactiv to compete more aggressively for enterprise retail clients by combining mobile app personalization with social engagement tools. With total funding of around US$12 million and a growing roster of prominent brands, the company is riding a broader industry move away from expensive custom development. As the holiday season passes, the planned platform integration will test whether the combined capabilities can deliver stronger customer retention and sales outcomes for merchants.
