Proparco, the French development finance institution, has announced its strategic backing for Agriarche Limited, a pioneering Nigerian agri-tech company. This crucial support, channeled through Proparco's Bridge Fund, is designed to empower smallholder farmers and fortify agricultural value chains across the nation. The female-led startup is at the forefront of leveraging technology to enhance market access, promote financial inclusion, and create tangible opportunities for thousands of farmers in underserved regions.

Addressing Systemic Agricultural Challenges

Nigeria's agricultural sector, a cornerstone of its economy, is hampered by significant structural barriers that impede its potential for growth. Millions of smallholder farmers consistently face fragmented supply chains, restricted access to viable markets, and a lack of adequate financing, which severely curtails their income. These deep-rooted inefficiencies contribute to staggering post-harvest losses, with the Federal Ministry of Agriculture estimating the annual cost to be over 3.5 trillion naira.

An Integrated Digital and Physical Model

Founded in 2020 by Deina Mayaki, Agriarche directly confronts these challenges with an integrated model that spans the entire value chain. The company's flagship platform, Kasuwa, serves as a digital ecosystem connecting farmers, aggregators, and food processors to foster a more transparent marketplace. This digital innovation is complemented by a network of physical fulfillment centers across nine Nigerian states, ensuring reliable logistics and commodity aggregation.

Launched in 2022, the Kasuwa platform provides its 3,000 active users with vital tools, including real-time market prices and secure digital payment systems. This access to information empowers farmers to make more strategic decisions, negotiate better terms, and ultimately increase their profitability. Furthermore, Agriarche delivers specialized training programs focused on sustainable and climate-adapted farming practices, boosting resilience and productivity.

Driving Impact and Strategic Alignment

The company's impact is already substantial, having onboarded over 25,000 farmers, of whom 42% are women. Through partnerships with input providers, Agriarche has helped farmers achieve an average 40% reduction in production costs, significantly improving their livelihoods. This project strongly aligns with Proparco’s 2023–2027 strategy by fostering economic development, food security, and job creation, particularly in fragile regions of Northern Nigeria.

Xavier Echasseriau, Proparco's Regional Director for Nigeria, expressed pride in supporting an innovative, women-led startup that contributes to more resilient agricultural systems. Echoing this sentiment, Agriarche's CEO Deina Mayaki stated that the partnership strengthens their ability to connect more farmers to reliable markets and expand financial inclusion. She affirmed their mission is to build a trusted ecosystem that makes food more available, affordable, and accessible across Africa.

This partnership between Proparco and Agriarche represents a pivotal investment in the modernization of Nigeria's agricultural landscape. By merging financial support with cutting-edge technological solutions, the initiative is well-positioned to create sustainable opportunities for the country's smallholder farmers. The collaboration ultimately promises to enhance national food security, drive financial inclusion, and cultivate a more prosperous and resilient agricultural sector for generations to come.
