PicoJool, a developer of optical connectivity for artificial intelligence infrastructure, has raised $27.5 million in a Series A funding round led by Socratic Partners, with participation from Hudson River Trading. The investment follows a $12 million seed round led by Playground Global and brings the company's total funding to $39.5 million. The capital will be used to expand teams and facilities in the United States and Taiwan while accelerating commercialization of its laser and optical link products.
Funding Details and Strategic Objectives
The Series A round was led by Socratic Partners, with Hudson River Trading joining as a participant and building on earlier backing from Playground Global. PicoJool plans to use the new financing to grow its research and development, operations, sales, and marketing organizations. The company will also build the capacity required to qualify, manufacture, and support products for hyperscalers and data center operators.
Product Portfolio and Technical Direction
PicoJool is advancing a portfolio that includes high-speed VCSEL products operating at 100G and 200G, as well as lower-power microVCSEL configurations at 50G NRZ and 64G NRZ/PAM4. These products are designed to help optical connectivity scale from 800G to 1.6T, 3.2T, and beyond. The microVCSEL platform uses a massively parallel architecture to increase aggregate bandwidth while reducing the energy required to move each bit of data.
Market Demand and Customer Interest
Artificial intelligence clusters are increasing both the number of processors in a system and the volume of data moving between them, which places growing pressure on interconnect performance and data center power budgets. PicoJool is seeing rising customer interest in its microVCSEL products, including 50G NRZ configurations for optical compute interconnects and 64G NRZ/PAM4 configurations for PCIe 6.0 based near package optics applications. The company has started early sampling of its chip-level VCSEL products ahead of broader availability.
Recent Product Milestones
In June, PicoJool unveiled its 200G VCSEL and microVCSEL product family for scale-up AI data centers. The 200G products exceed 37GHz of bandwidth, and the portfolio includes quad 100G, quad 200G, and 32x50G NRZ microVCSEL configurations. These options give customers multiple paths to 1.6T connectivity based on bandwidth, power, and system requirements.
Manufacturing and Industry Collaboration
PicoJool is working with WIN Semiconductor and other gallium arsenide foundries to prepare its 200G VCSELs for production. WIN has shipped more than one billion chips over the past decade, bringing significant high-volume manufacturing experience to the effort. The company is also collaborating with system companies and hyperscalers to define next-generation pluggable, near package optics, and co-packaged optics solutions.
Executive Perspectives
Founder and CEO Al Yuen said reaching 200G per lane proved performance and that the focus now is execution, qualifying products and moving from chip-level VCSELs into active optical cable and near package optics modules. Socratic Partners General Partner Greg Waters noted that efficient data movement dictates how quickly AI scales, calling PicoJool a vital connectivity platform. Playground Global's Pat Gelsinger added that connectivity is a defining constraint and that PicoJool brings breakthrough VCSEL performance and manufacturing scale.
The $27.5 million Series A positions PicoJool to move from technical milestones toward customer qualification and production readiness. With manufacturing partnerships in place and early sampling underway, the company is preparing a portfolio that addresses critical bandwidth and power challenges in hyperscale AI data centers. The investment underscores growing confidence that VCSEL-based optical connectivity can provide a cost-effective path for next-generation AI infrastructure.
