Photon, a San Francisco-based messaging infrastructure startup, has raised US$4.5 million in Seed funding to accelerate its platform that lets developers deploy AI agents directly inside iMessage, WhatsApp, RCS, SMS, and other channels. The round was co-led by Gradient and A*, with participation from Vercel, HongShan, Z Fellows, Llama Ventures, Karman, and angel investors. Photon said the capital will support product development, onboarding of design partners, and scaling iMessage business messaging for regulated industries.

An Ambitious Bet on Messaging

Photon's founders Daniel Tian and Ryan Zhu believe the mobile app era is giving way to agents that operate where users already communicate. Their conviction was strong enough that the company staged a symbolic funeral for mobile apps in San Francisco on September 17. The event doubled as a developer day featuring speakers from Vercel, Stripe, and OpenAI, while a coffin held app icons.

How the Spectrum SDK Works

The company's core product, Spectrum SDK, gives developers a single integration across iMessage, RCS, SMS, WhatsApp, Telegram, email, voice, and other channels. In June, Photon shipped what it describes as the first mini-app API on iMessage, enabling buttons, forms, and live interfaces inside a conversation. The open-source version still accounts for 98% of usage, while the managed platform adds uptime guarantees and compliance certifications.

Growth and Early Customers

Photon reports more than 40,000 developer sign-ups and 500 paying customers in less than a year, with churn below 3%, and its revenue grew 10 times between May and August. Early customers include Corgi Insurance, Boardy, Ditto, Rho, Fliptexts, and Slashy across fintech, consumer AI, and other vertical use cases. Message volume increased 5 times in September, and the platform now powers chat experiences for more than 1 million end users.

Compliance and Strategic Integrations

Photon's managed platform offers 99.95% uptime and is SOC 2 Type II and HIPAA compliant, which the company says positions it to serve regulated industries. Photon is the official iMessage adapter for Vercel's Chat SDK and the default iMessage layer for Nous Research's Hermes Agent. It also has integrations across LangChain, Mastra, Convex, Render, Railway, and Telnyx.

Investor Views and Market Context

Gradient partner Vig Sachidananda said messaging channels like iMessage and RCS have already onboarded more than a billion users and offer richer experiences than traditional AI interfaces. A* co-founder Kevin Hartz brings consumer-scale experience from Eventbrite and investments such as Ramp and Mercor. The funding round included Vercel as both an investor and an integration partner, alongside HongShan, formerly Sequoia China.

Competitive Landscape

Photon faces competition from Linq, which announced a US$20 million Series A led by TQ Ventures on February 2, 2026, and offers a similar messaging layer for iMessage, RCS, and SMS. Larger incumbents such as Bird have also expanded into agent tooling after securing US$450 million in debt in September. Analysts have raised the question of whether the agent economy needs a separate messaging layer or will be absorbed by platform owners like Apple and Meta.

Photon's early traction suggests a meaningful developer appetite for messaging-native agent infrastructure. The company's challenge is to sustain growth while navigating platforms that control the underlying channels and may change their policies. With fresh capital and a compliance-ready platform, Photon aims to establish itself as the communication layer for both human-to-agent and agent-to-agent interactions.
