Philadelphia-based HR technology firm Phenom has acquired Kitchener-Waterloo's Plum, a talent assessment company. The acquisition aims to combat the growing challenge of AI-generated resumes and deepfake interviews in the hiring process. By integrating Plum's psychometric tools, Phenom will enhance its ability to verify the durable human skills that are critical for job success.
Addressing the AI-Era Hiring Challenge
Employers are confronting a new verification crisis as fraudulent applications become more sophisticated and common. Industry analysts project that by 2028, one in four job candidate profiles worldwide will be fabricated. This trend exacerbates the high cost of bad hires, which can amount to 30 percent of an employee's first-year salary.
Plum's platform was designed to identify authentic talent by measuring essential soft skills that AI cannot replicate. Its psychometric-based assessments evaluate traits like adaptability, judgment, and resilience with scientifically validated accuracy. This method has proven to be four times more effective than resume screening alone and can significantly reduce hiring mistakes.
Strategic Integration and Enhanced Capabilities
The integration of Plum completes Phenom's full-spectrum assessment stack, providing a comprehensive tool for talent evaluation. This allows organizations to measure cognitive, behavioral, and situational capabilities for any role at an enterprise scale. This acquisition is Phenom's third this year, following the purchases of people analytics platform Included and skills assessment firm Be Applied. In practice, the new capabilities will allow a healthcare system to assess a nurse's empathy or a financial firm to evaluate a manager's judgment. Phenom's AI agents will automate the creation and delivery of these tailored behavioral assessments. This process turns what previously took weeks into a matter of hours, enabling scalable and precise hiring.

According to Phenom CEO Mahe Bayireddi, human skills have never been more important as AI commoditizes general intelligence. Plum co-founder Caitlin MacGregor added that joining Phenom allows her company's science to scale globally. Their shared vision is to embed behavioral science into everyday talent decisions to surface overlooked potential.
As part of the deal, whose financial terms were not disclosed, all Plum employees have joined Phenom's 1,600-person team. This transaction also marks Phenom's official expansion into Canada, where it plans to grow its presence. Plum had previously raised a total of $19 million CAD in venture funding to develop its platform.
