Pan-African financial technology platform Moment has successfully closed a $22 million Series A funding round to bolster its continental expansion. The investment was led by AlphaCode Venture Partners and included participation from existing backers General Catalyst and MultiChoice, alongside a new strategic investment from Canal+. This latest capital injection brings Moment’s total funding to $55 million, reinforcing its mission to build robust digital payment infrastructure across Africa.

Navigating Africa's Complex Payment Ecosystem

Africa's payment landscape presents a significant challenge for businesses due to its extreme fragmentation and diverse consumer behaviors. Payment preferences vary dramatically from one country to another, creating complex operational hurdles for companies aiming for regional scale. This environment has historically acted as a barrier to both commercial growth and broader participation in the digital economy.

For instance, over two-thirds of retail transactions in South Africa still occur in person, while Nigeria's commercial flows are dominated by real-time bank transfers. In East and West Africa, mobile money is prevalent but is divided across dozens of non-interoperable telecom operators. This lack of uniformity complicates payment collection for merchants operating across these different markets.

Moment directly addresses these structural divides by providing a unified infrastructure layer that consolidates various payment methods. The platform supports everything from cards and mobile money to bank transfers and recurring debits. It also includes an extensive physical acceptance network spanning over two million in-person locations to ensure comprehensive coverage.

Building Resilient Infrastructure for Enterprise Scale

The company has demonstrated significant operational traction, processing payments for more than 10 million individuals every month for some of Africa's leading brands. Its platform is engineered to manage high volumes, successfully handling over 600,000 transactions on a daily basis. This scale underscores its capability to serve large enterprise clients effectively across the continent.

A key differentiator for Moment is its platform's resilience, which is specifically designed to operate reliably despite regional infrastructure challenges. The system maintains low latency and high availability even amidst the power and telecommunications disruptions that often plague the market. This stability is crucial for businesses that depend on consistent payment processing for their revenue.

Moment provides a suite of tools tailored for corporate billers, insurers, and subscription-based businesses. These include automated workflows for recovering failed payments, advanced REST APIs for direct billing integrations, and data-driven reconciliation engines. These features help enterprises accelerate settlement times and significantly lower their payment acceptance costs.

Investor Confidence and Strategic Vision

The funding round highlights strong investor confidence in Moment's strategy and execution. Dominique Collett of AlphaCode Venture Partners noted that Moment is dismantling a "hidden tax on commerce" by building a defining piece of Africa's financial infrastructure. Similarly, Thomas Follin of Canal+ praised the company for driving down costs while simultaneously improving service quality for enterprise customers.

The company's collaborative approach with its partners is also a key driver of its success and future roadmap. Giulio di Giannatale of Sanlam described Moment as a "genuine innovation partner," pointing to joint efforts in embedded insurance and data-driven collection optimization. This new funding provides the runway to accelerate these proven initiatives and deepen strategic collaborations.

This $22 million Series A round marks a pivotal moment for the fintech company, equipping it with the resources to deepen its network and accelerate its growth. By tackling the core issues of payment fragmentation with a resilient and scalable platform, Moment is solidifying its position as a critical enabler of commerce. The investment validates its vision and strengthens its capacity to expand digital financial access for businesses and consumers across Africa.
