Plymouth-based marine robotics startup Oshen has successfully secured £3.65 million in a new investment round. The company specializes in developing swarms of autonomous, solar and wind-powered robots to provide wide-area monitoring of the world's oceans. This fresh capital injection is earmarked to significantly scale up manufacturing to meet increasing demand from naval, meteorological, and scientific clients.
A New Paradigm for Ocean Sensing
Oshen is pioneering what it calls a "persistent sensing layer" to overcome the vast gaps in real-time ocean data. Its strategy involves deploying large constellations of small, one-metre C-Star robots that operate for months without maintenance. This approach marks a significant departure from traditional methods that rely on a few large, expensive platforms for observation.
Scaling Production to Meet Demand
Company co-founder and CEO, Anahita Laverack, emphasized that the challenge is no longer sensing but manufacturing at scale. Oshen has transformed its C-Star production into a system resembling a fast-food kitchen, focusing on speed and repeatability. This innovative process allows the company to establish production facilities anywhere to meet global demand efficiently.
With the new funding, Oshen plans to triple its current production rate, which has already seen remarkable acceleration. The company now builds 15 of its C-Star vessels every six weeks, a stark contrast to the three years it took to build the first 15 units. This streamlined system enables a new technician to assemble parts in under thirty minutes, ensuring rapid scalability.
Dual Applications in Security and Climate
Oshen's technology serves critical functions across both security and environmental sectors, with over one hundred more units already on order. For defence, the robots provide low-cost surveillance in areas prone to illegal activities like unsanctioned shipping and narcotics trafficking. They also play a vital role in protecting critical subsea infrastructure such as data cables and pipelines.
In meteorology, the C-Star constellations gather crucial surface data that is often under-measured, improving the accuracy of weather forecasts. Better data can help predict a hurricane's rapid intensification, allowing for earlier and more effective evacuations. This capability was proven when three C-Stars successfully navigated a Category 5 hurricane while transmitting live data.
Strategic Investment Fuels Future Growth
The investment round was led by Lunar Ventures, with significant participation from AlbionVC, Twin Track, and Concept Ventures. Mick Halsband, General Partner at Lunar Ventures, noted that governments increasingly rely on this type of ocean information for security and weather forecasting. He highlighted that Oshen is among the first to turn the shift from scarcity to scale into an operational reality.
This capital will not only boost manufacturing but also support the company's rapid team expansion, which has grown to nearly 30 employees. Furthermore, the funds will be directed toward technical advancements in high-demand areas. These include passive acoustics for ship detection, enhanced protection of subsea infrastructure, and anti-submarine warfare capabilities.
This £3.65 million investment marks a pivotal moment for Oshen, empowering the company to realize its vision of a fully monitored ocean. By scaling its unique manufacturing process, the startup is poised to deliver an unprecedented volume of data for both defence and climate science.
