Ornn, a startup building financial infrastructure for the AI compute market, has successfully closed a $33 million seed funding round. Founded by MIT alumni Kush Bavaria and Wayne Nelms, the company aims to create a modern marketplace for this rapidly growing asset class. This significant investment will accelerate the development of tools designed to bring transparency and stability to the compute industry.

Addressing a Market Immaturity

The global buildout of AI infrastructure represents one of the largest capital formation events in history, with trillions expected in investment. Despite its scale, the market for compute power remains surprisingly immature compared to other major commodities. It lacks the standardized financial instruments needed for efficient pricing, hedging, and risk management that are common in sectors like energy.

This immaturity results in opaque pricing negotiated on a deal-by-deal basis, creating significant inefficiencies. Infrastructure operators find it difficult to hedge future revenue, and investors lack direct pathways to gain exposure to the asset class. Consequently, a multi-trillion dollar industry is largely financed through informal agreements and private negotiations rather than structured markets.

Building the Financial Stack for Compute

Ornn is addressing these challenges by developing the foundational financial stack that the compute market currently lacks. The company's primary goal is to introduce clear price signals and sophisticated tools for managing risk. This will transform compute from a series of backroom deals into a fully functioning and transparent marketplace.

A cornerstone of this effort is the Ornn Compute Price Index (OCPI), an institutional-grade benchmark for GPU compute. Unlike other metrics, the OCPI is built from cleared trades, ensuring its accuracy and reliability for financial professionals. The index is already live on the Bloomberg Terminal, signaling early market adoption and trust in Ornn's data.

Beyond price indices, Ornn is developing a suite of financial products to support the ecosystem. These include futures contracts for hedging forward prices and residual value protection to better assess long-term asset worth. The company is also creating capital markets products to provide investors with direct exposure to data center revenues.

Vision and Leadership

The company is led by co-founders Kush Bavaria and Wayne Nelms, who bring a unique blend of expertise from their time at MIT. Their vision is rooted in the simple but powerful idea that compute is a critical global commodity deserving of a modern financial market. They aim to provide the rails that make AI infrastructure as financeable and tradable as oil or real estate.

This $33 million seed funding round marks a significant milestone for Ornn and the broader AI infrastructure landscape. The investment validates the urgent need for sophisticated financial tools to support the industry's explosive growth. Ornn is now well-positioned to build the essential market infrastructure that will define the financial future of compute.
