Ore Energy Raises $43 Million Series A to Scale Iron-Air Battery Technology

Ore Energy, a Dutch company developing long-duration energy storage solutions, has successfully raised $43 million in a Series A funding round. The investment was co-led by Plural and HV, with participation from Positron Ventures, bringing the company's total capital raised to over $61 million. This new funding will accelerate the scaling of Ore Energy's innovative iron-air battery technology, designed to make renewable energy a reliable and affordable baseload power source.


Addressing the Energy Storage Imperative

The global demand for electricity is surging, driven by the rapid expansion of AI infrastructure, manufacturing, and the broader energy transition. Data centers alone are projected to more than double their electricity consumption by 2030, with AI-specific facilities quadrupling their needs. This creates immense pressure on power grids, making advanced energy storage critical to maintaining a stable and reliable supply for these power-intensive operations.

While wind and solar are the cheapest sources of new electricity, their intermittent nature creates a significant challenge for grid operators. This mismatch between generation and demand leads to costly curtailment, where renewable energy is wasted. Across Europe, an estimated 72 TWh of clean electricity is lost annually through grid bottlenecks, representing a substantial economic and environmental loss that hinders the transition away from fossil fuels.

Innovative Iron-Air Battery Technology

Ore Energy's solution is a novel iron-air battery that stores energy by effectively rusting and unrusting iron electrodes. This process utilizes abundant and low-cost materials, including iron, water, and air, enabling a fully European supply chain. The technology circumvents the need for expensive and geopolitically sensitive critical raw materials such as lithium and cobalt, which are common in other battery chemistries.

Designed for long-duration applications, these batteries can store renewable electricity for up to 100 hours before dispatching it to the grid. The company's scalable, modular design delivers a plug-and-play system at a cost estimated to be ten times lower per unit of energy capacity than lithium-ion alternatives. This breakthrough makes firm, round-the-clock renewable power an economically viable replacement for natural gas power plants.

Scaling Production and Commercial Traction

The Series A funding will be instrumental in establishing Ore Energy's first manufacturing facility, a key step toward its goal of gigawatt-hour scale production by 2028. This facility will validate the company's manufacturing processes at scale. The investment will also support a significant expansion of the team across manufacturing, commercial, and operational departments to drive its ambitious growth plans.

The company has already achieved significant commercial milestones, demonstrating strong market demand for its technology. Ore Energy has signed a 1GWh supply agreement with Budget Thuis, a Dutch energy and telecoms utility supplier. Additionally, successful pilot projects with French utility giant EDF have validated the performance and reliability of its iron-air batteries in real-world utility environments, paving the way for broader adoption.

Investor Confidence and Future Vision

Investors have voiced strong support for Ore Energy's mission to solve one of the energy transition's most significant challenges. Ian Hogarth, a partner at Plural, emphasized that unlocking long-duration storage will transform how industries and AI data centers are powered globally. He highlighted the technology's potential to become a critical European export, bolstering the continent's role in the future of energy.

Maxi Pethö-Schramm, a principal at HV, noted that Ore's technology is essential for meeting the future energy demands of AI while providing European industry with affordable baseload power. According to CEO Aytac Yilmaz, this funding puts the company on a path to making renewable electricity available whenever and wherever it is needed. The company's ultimate vision is to establish iron-air as the standard for grid-scale storage.


With this substantial new investment, Ore Energy is well-positioned to advance its manufacturing capabilities and commercial rollout. The company's iron-air battery technology offers a scalable and cost-effective path to overcoming the intermittency of renewables. This development marks a critical step toward building a stable, affordable, and sustainable energy infrastructure capable of powering the world's next industrial age.
