Australian artificial intelligence start-up OpenDebt has closed a pre-seed funding round of A$2 million led by Blackbird Ventures, with participation from Antler and angel investors across financial services and artificial intelligence. The Sydney-based company is building compliance-first technology that helps lenders and collection agencies resolve consumer debt more efficiently and fairly. The new capital will support team growth, wider Australian deployments and early partnership exploration in the United States.
Funding momentum and market opportunity
The close of the pre-seed round comes as OpenDebt accelerates deployments with Australian lenders and collection agencies, including autonomous agents handling conversations for a national collection agency. The company will use the funding to scale its team and operations while exploring partnership opportunities in the United States. According to New York Fed data cited by OpenDebt, approximately US$880 billion in household debt balances were in some stage of delinquency at the end of June 2026.
A different approach to debt recovery
Co-founded by Norman Yan and Jonas Tischer in Sydney, OpenDebt takes a consumer-focused and compliance-first approach to debt collection. Its AI-native technology identifies why an account is unpaid and responds with simple settlement options or a clear path to a specialist for people experiencing hardship. The platform is particularly effective for high-volume, low-value accounts such as buy now pay later, payday loans, utilities, healthcare and credit card debts.
Building compliance before autonomy
OpenDebt did not begin with autonomous agents but first provided real-time compliance guidance to collection agents, helping establish the compliance and quality framework now applied to its own AI systems. Debt collection guidelines are embedded in the agent workflow, the AI discloses that it is automated from the start, and identity verification is completed before any information implying a debt is shared. SMS and email self-service options also allow accounts to be settled without a phone conversation.
Human escalation and hardship support
If a call does occur, the AI agent is designed to recognise indicators of financial difficulty and route the customer to a trained specialist. Customers can also request a person at any point, and OpenDebt hands the conversation across with key details already captured so nothing has to be repeated. According to the company, this model ensures every customer receives the same level of support whether theirs is the first call of the day or the ten thousandth.
Changing the economics of collection
Capacity is a major structural constraint in the sector because there is more debt in the market than there are people to collect it. Lenders and agencies cannot hire fast enough against high turnover in what can be emotionally demanding work. By lowering the cost of a consumer debt conversation, OpenDebt changes the economics of recovery and makes it viable to contact every customer personally, understand their circumstances and offer tailored solutions.
Investor and founder perspectives
OpenDebt CEO and co-founder Norman Yan said an unpaid account does not reveal why someone has not paid, and the company helps lenders respond to different circumstances at scale. CTO Jonas Tischer explained that reliable AI debt recovery requires accurate account information, compliance with approved terms and appropriate escalation when disputes or financial difficulty arise. Blackbird partner Samantha Wong said the founders built the compliance framework before the AI, while Antler partner Michael Kron noted their deep financial services experience and early ASX-listed customer traction.
OpenDebt is positioned to change the economics of debt recovery by making it affordable to contact every customer personally and offer tailored solutions. The company is already working with Australian lenders and collection agencies and sees its local compliance-first model translating to international markets. With fresh funding and early deployments in place, OpenDebt aims to scale a more consistent and responsive experience while helping human specialists focus their judgement where it matters most.
