OPAQUE, a San Francisco-based confidential AI firm, has acquired advanced cryptographic technologies from Abu Dhabi's Technology Innovation Institute (TII). This strategic move enhances OPAQUE's platform with post-quantum protections and secure AI model training capabilities. The acquisition marks a significant milestone, enabling safer AI deployment on highly sensitive and regulated data.

Enhancing AI Security Across the Full Lifecycle

The newly acquired technology integrates critical capabilities into OPAQUE's existing platform, including confidential AI model training using advanced cryptographic methods. This enhancement provides a comprehensive solution covering training, inference, and AI agent execution. It addresses a major industry challenge where companies often rely on multiple, disconnected security solutions, creating vulnerabilities.

Many enterprises possess valuable data in sectors like healthcare and finance that remains untapped due to privacy and compliance concerns. OPAQUE aims to unlock this potential by offering a unified platform with hardware-attested cryptographic evidence. This approach is designed to accelerate the transition of AI projects from experimental stages to full production deployment.

A Landmark US-UAE Technology Collaboration

This transaction represents the first time a US technology company has acquired and scaled cryptographic AI technology developed in the United Arab Emirates. The deal was overseen by H.E. Faisal Al Bannai of Abu Dhabi's Advanced Technology Research Council and OPAQUE co-founder Ion Stoica. It highlights a growing trend of global collaboration in developing foundational technologies for the AI economy.

According to H.E. Faisal Al Bannai, the acquisition validates the UAE's strategy to produce foundational technology for global adoption. For TII, the partnership with OPAQUE provides the ideal platform to bring its advanced research from the lab into real-world applications. This move establishes the UAE as a key contributor to the infrastructure powering the next generation of trusted AI.

Enabling Safe Deployment in High-Stakes Industries

The power of AI agents presents significant risks when connected to sensitive systems like patient records or financial data. OPAQUE CEO Aaron Fulkerson emphasized that the only way to deploy them safely is with hardware-enforced, verifiable rules. The platform provides provable evidence of what processes ran, where they ran, and which security policies were enforced.

OPAQUE's architecture is rooted in hardware-based Trusted Execution Environments, ensuring that customer data remains inaccessible even to OPAQUE itself. This feature is critical for sovereign AI programs and regulated industries that require cryptographic proof of data residency and control. The platform generates evidence aligned with major compliance frameworks, including GDPR and the EU AI Act.

This acquisition, following a recent $24 million Series B funding round, positions OPAQUE as a leader in the confidential AI space. By integrating TII's post-quantum cryptographic technology, the company offers a unique, end-to-end solution for enterprises and governments. The move is set to accelerate the secure and compliant adoption of AI across the world's most sensitive sectors.
