Phoenix-based startup One Raven has officially launched with a mission to reshape the smart home industry through a privacy-centric approach. The company announced a $5 million seed funding round led by Fifth Wall, the largest venture capital firm focused on technologies for the built environment. One Raven aims to provide homeowners with a seamless, secure, and subscription-free smart home experience by keeping all data and processing within the home itself.
Redefining Home Intelligence
The modern smart home often presents a complex web of applications, recurring fees, and dependencies on cloud services, raising significant privacy concerns. Many homeowners find their devices lose functionality during internet outages or when companies alter their business models. One Raven challenges this status quo by building its platform from the ground up to ensure what happens inside the home stays inside the home.
At the core of the system is the One Raven Home Server, which enables all connected devices to operate locally without sending data to external servers. The company offers a suite of devices, including thermostats and security sensors, that arrive pre-paired and factory-configured for immediate use. This local-first architecture eliminates the need for subscriptions and prevents the monetization of personal behavioral data, returning full control to the homeowner.
Experienced Founders at the Helm
One Raven is led by co-founders Lucas Haldeman and Sarah Roudybush, the executive team that previously scaled SmartRent into a leading smart apartment platform. They are now applying their extensive industry experience to create a smart home solution designed specifically for homeowners, not institutional landlords. Their goal is to build a system that prioritizes the individual's desire for a modern living experience without compromising personal privacy.
"We spent a decade building the smart home for the Renters and Commercial Owners of multifamily portfolios," said CEO Lucas Haldeman. "One Raven is for every homeowner who wants a modern living experience while maintaining their privacy." President Sarah Roudybush added that the first generation of smart homes was flawed, and One Raven is proving a better model exists where intelligence and ownership remain with the homeowner.
Fifth Wall Leads Strategic Investment
The $5 million seed investment was led by Fifth Wall, which had previously backed Haldeman and Roudybush during their tenure at SmartRent. This renewed partnership underscores the venture firm's confidence in the team's vision for the next generation of home technology. As part of the investment, Fifth Wall Founder and CEO Brendan Wallace will join One Raven's board of directors.
Wallace expressed strong support for the company's direction, contrasting it with the fragmented, cloud-dependent models of the past. "One Raven is building the opposite: a local-first, privacy-first platform designed for homeowners, builders, and a future where the home itself becomes intelligence infrastructure," he stated. The capital will be used to scale production of the Home Server and device suite, enhance software, and expand the company's sales and partnership teams.
A Future-Proof, Privacy-First Approach
One Raven's launch is timely, aligning with growing consumer apprehension about data privacy and the longevity of connected devices. Recent studies highlight widespread concern, with a Pew Research Center report indicating that 81% of Americans worry about how companies use their data. By eliminating external data collection and subscription fees, One Raven directly addresses these market anxieties and offers a more sustainable and trustworthy alternative.
With its significant seed funding and a leadership team with a proven track record, One Raven is poised to challenge the established norms of the smart home market. The company's commitment to local processing, data privacy, and homeowner ownership presents a compelling vision for the future of connected living. As it prepares to announce its first homebuilder partnerships, One Raven is set to deliver on the original, simpler promise of a truly smart home.
