London-based AI hardware startup OLIX has successfully closed a $312 million Series B funding round, achieving a remarkable $3.3 billion valuation just two years after its inception. This significant capital injection, backed by prominent investors like Fundomo and Arm, will accelerate the company's mission to redefine AI inference. OLIX is developing a specialized silicon platform designed to overcome the efficiency bottlenecks of current general-purpose hardware.
A New Approach to AI Compute
OLIX challenges the industry's reliance on general-purpose GPUs for AI inference, arguing that a specialized approach is necessary for a step-change in performance. The company's X-1 platform treats token generation like a factory production line, unrolling models across numerous custom chips. Each chip is tailored to a specific stage of the process, creating a more efficient and powerful system for AI workloads.
Innovative Hardware and Strategic Design
The first product from this platform is the DX-1 decode accelerator, which focuses on the reasoning and output generation phase of a model. To bypass current supply chain shortages, the DX-1 utilizes fast on-chip SRAM instead of high-bandwidth memory and advanced packaging. This design is complemented by a novel "slow and wide" optical interconnect that uses light to transfer data between chips with minimal latency.
Bolstering Leadership and Strategic Vision
To guide its ambitious growth, OLIX has made two significant additions to its leadership team. Professor Nick McKeown, a pioneer in software-defined networking and a Stanford Professor Emeritus, has been appointed to the board of directors. Joining him is Matt Briers, the former CFO of Wise, who will serve as Chief Financial Officer, bringing extensive experience in scaling technology companies.
Fueling Growth and Future Ambitions
The $312 million in new funding provides a clear runway for OLIX to execute its strategic goals. The capital is earmarked to deliver the DX-1 chip to its first customers by the second half of 2027 and secure manufacturing commitments. It will also support a significant expansion of its engineering teams across its offices in London, Bristol, Austin, Toronto, and San Francisco.
Strong Investor and Government Confidence
The funding round attracted a powerful syndicate of investors, including new backers Fundomo, Arm, and Hudson River Trading, alongside Netflix co-founder Reed Hastings. Existing investors such as Hummingbird Ventures and Crane also increased their commitments, signaling strong confidence in the company's direction. Furthermore, OLIX has received backing from the UK government’s Sovereign AI venture fund, underscoring its national strategic importance.
This substantial Series B round positions OLIX as a formidable contender in the competitive AI semiconductor market. With its innovative architecture, strategic leadership, and robust financial backing, the company is well-equipped to challenge industry norms. OLIX's progress will be closely watched as it aims to deliver a new generation of hardware that could unlock more powerful and accessible AI models.
