Cybersecurity startup Ocean has officially launched from stealth, securing $28 million in total funding to pioneer its Agentic Email Security platform. The funding round was led by Lightspeed Venture Partners, with participation from Picture Capital and Cerca Partners. Ocean aims to combat the rising wave of sophisticated, AI-powered email attacks that easily bypass traditional security measures.
The Evolving Threat Landscape
Email continues to be the most significant entry point for cyberattacks, initiating over 90% of successful breaches against enterprises. Previously, highly targeted spear phishing attacks were difficult to scale, but generative AI has changed the equation entirely. Attackers can now automate the creation of deeply personalized and convincing malicious emails at an unprecedented volume.
“The challenge is no longer just detecting malicious emails,” stated Shay Shwartz, CEO and co-founder of Ocean. “It’s identifying harmful intent hidden inside messages that appear completely legitimate.” Attackers now leverage AI to mimic trusted colleagues and reference real projects, making their malicious communications nearly indistinguishable from normal business correspondence.
A New Paradigm in Email Security
In response to this new threat, Ocean has introduced an AI-native platform centered on autonomous investigation rather than simple detection. At its core is “Ray,” an autonomous engine that reviews every incoming email in real time. Ray analyzes the sender, content, links, and business context to determine if a message can be trusted.
This investigative approach enables companies to effectively stop impersonation, business email compromise, and other targeted attacks designed to blend in. By automating the investigation and response workflow, Ocean significantly reduces the manual burden on security operations teams. This allows organizations to scale their defenses and respond to threats with greater speed and confidence.
Investor Confidence and Market Validation
The significant funding round highlights strong investor belief in Ocean's innovative approach to a critical security challenge. David Gussarsky of Lightspeed Venture Partners noted that the old model of flagging suspicious signals is no longer sufficient for today's threats. He emphasized that Ocean's focus on autonomous investigation represents a fundamental and necessary shift in the market.
Mike Fey of Picture Capital added that the founding team's background in offensive security provides a unique advantage. “They know this world because they used to operate in it,” he remarked, underscoring their deep understanding of attacker methodologies. This expertise, combined with advanced AI, positions the company to effectively counter the very tools attackers now use.
Ocean has already gained significant traction, protecting hundreds of thousands of mailboxes for clients including KAYAK, Kingston Technology, and Headspace. The platform is already replacing legacy tools in complex enterprise and Global Fortune 500 environments. This early adoption demonstrates the platform's effectiveness and the urgent market demand for a more advanced email security solution.
With its official launch and substantial $28 million in funding, Ocean is poised to redefine the email security landscape. The company's agentic, AI-driven platform offers a proactive investigation model designed for the era of sophisticated cyber threats. As businesses face increasingly realistic and automated attacks, Ocean's approach provides a critical new layer of defense.
