AI infrastructure firm Nscale has announced a landmark acquisition of the Monarch Compute Campus in West Virginia, a site with the potential for over eight gigawatts of power. This strategic move is coupled with a major agreement to provide Microsoft with 1.35 gigawatts of AI compute capacity. The deal positions Nscale as a critical player in the development of next-generation AI infrastructure in the United States.


A Strategic Acquisition for US Expansion

Nscale has acquired American Intelligence & Power Corporation, securing the 2,250-acre Monarch Compute Campus for its expansion. The site is distinguished as the first state-certified AI microgrid in the United States, underscoring its unique capabilities. This acquisition provides Nscale with a significant foothold in the world's largest AI market, aligning with its global growth ambitions.

Powering Next-Generation AI with Microsoft and NVIDIA

A letter of intent has been signed with Microsoft to deliver 1.35 gigawatts of AI compute, establishing one of the world's largest dedicated AI facilities. The campus will serve as a global flagship deployment for NVIDIA’s next-generation Vera Rubin NVL72 GPUs. This large-scale deployment is scheduled to begin in late 2027, marking a new era for AI training and inference.

Industry leaders have recognized the collaboration's importance for advancing AI capabilities on a global scale. Jon Tinter of Microsoft noted the project aligns with their strategy of building robust global infrastructure to meet long-term demand. NVIDIA’s Nico Caprez added that Nscale is building the essential foundation required to produce intelligence at an industrial scale.

Building an Independent Power Infrastructure

To power the massive facility, Nscale is collaborating with Caterpillar to install natural gas generator sets. The initial goal is to achieve two gigawatts of on-site power generation by the first half of 2028. This microgrid approach accelerates the timeline from site development to live compute, bypassing traditional infrastructure constraints.

The project emphasizes responsible community and environmental integration by operating independently of the local utility grid. This design protects local ratepayers from increased energy burdens and includes plans for future carbon sequestration. Furthermore, the campus will utilize a high-efficiency design to minimize its impact on municipal water supplies.

Meeting Surging AI Infrastructure Demand

This development arrives as the demand for AI-specific data center capacity is projected to increase dramatically by 2030. Nscale CEO Josh Payne stated that the Monarch campus allows the company to directly meet this surging demand in the United States. The site's proximity to major hubs like Ashburn and Chicago will also provide customers with crucial low-latency connectivity.

The acquisition, which reportedly attracted interest from other tech giants, is expected to triple Nscale's near-term revenue projections. This move builds upon the company's recent $2 billion funding round and existing projects in Texas, the UK, and Norway. It solidifies Nscale's rapid ascent as a specialized provider of large-scale AI infrastructure solutions.
