Shopify merchants now have a new option for building custom applications without traditional development overhead. Nitro Commerce has launched Nitro Apps, an AI-powered platform that allows merchants to create tailored applications using simple prompts. The startup publicly unveiled the platform at Inc42's 'The D2C & Retail Summit 2026'.
Addressing Merchant Pain Points
Shopify merchants often manage operations through multiple applications that may not fully meet their needs. Off-the-shelf software can be limiting when stores require specialized loyalty programmes, GST reconciliation tools, or branded customer experiences. Traditional custom development takes significant resources, which has kept tailored apps out of reach for many smaller merchants.
How Nitro Apps Works
Nitro Apps brings what the startup calls vibe coding to the Shopify ecosystem by allowing merchants to describe the software they need instead of developing it from scratch. The platform accepts natural language prompts and proceeds to create and install the application directly into the merchant's Shopify backend. Each application remains private to the merchant's store, and the merchant retains ownership of the underlying code.
Demonstration Shows Speed and Simplicity
During the launch, Nitro Commerce cofounder and CEO Umair Mohammad presented a pre-recorded demonstration in which Nitro Apps was prompted to create a few discount-giving games for a Shopify store. The prompt did not specify the type of games required, leaving the platform to determine what to build. Nitro Apps subsequently generated the games and added them to the store's admin panel.
A New Cost and Time Equation
According to Mohammad, the two games presented at the event took six hours to build and cost $44. He claimed that developing a similar application through conventional methods could require at least four developers and a month of work. This contrast highlights how artificial intelligence is changing the cost and time involved in software development for ecommerce merchants.
Supporting Internal Business Workflows
Beyond customer-facing experiences, the platform can build tools for internal business workflows. Merchants can create applications for GST reconciliation, loyalty programmes, and other requirements where suitable off-the-shelf software may not be available. This flexibility helps stores reduce dependence on a patchwork of third-party applications and address operational gaps without commissioning large development projects.
Early Validation from Private Beta
Nitro Commerce reported that more than 700 apps were created during the platform's private beta before its public launch. This early activity indicates strong merchant interest in AI-assisted app development for Shopify stores. The company expects the public release to build on this momentum as more merchants experiment with prompt-based software creation.
A Shift Toward Tailored Software
Mohammad said the platform enables merchants to build software tailored to their requirements rather than relying solely on existing applications. He stated that technology is no longer a constraint and pointed to how AI is reducing the time and cost of software development. With Nitro Apps, the startup is betting that quicker and cheaper development will make custom software more accessible to Shopify merchants.
The launch of Nitro Apps reflects a broader shift toward AI-assisted development in the ecommerce space. By simplifying app creation through prompts, Nitro Commerce is positioning itself to help Shopify merchants move beyond the limitations of off-the-shelf software. As the platform opens to public use, its ability to deliver private, cost-effective applications could become an important tool for merchants seeking greater operational flexibility.
