New Zealand-based Neocrete has successfully secured $3.5 million in a new funding round to advance its concrete decarbonization technology. The investment was led by returning backer Wavemaker Ventures and Catalytic Capital for Climate and Health (C3H), a vehicle of Temasek Trust. This capital will fuel the company's expansion into European and US markets while deepening its presence in Southeast Asia.

Innovative Approach to Sustainable Concrete

Neocrete has developed a proprietary additive that transforms low-performance materials, such as volcanic and fly ash, into effective cement substitutes. This technology allows for the replacement of 30% to 50% of the cement typically used in concrete production. The innovation significantly reduces the final product's embodied carbon while maintaining crucial structural integrity and workability.

This development is critical for an industry responsible for a substantial portion of global emissions, with cement manufacturing being a primary contributor. Neocrete's solution directly addresses the challenge by offering a lower-carbon alternative that is also more cost-effective. The company has proven that sustainability in construction does not require a financial trade-off, a key barrier to adoption.

Commercial Success and Scalability

The company's technology has been successfully proven at a commercial scale through a partnership with Readymix Brunei, the country's largest concrete supplier. To date, the collaboration has resulted in pouring 3,700 cubic metres of low-carbon concrete. This has achieved a 25% reduction in embodied carbon, saving nearly $20,000 and avoiding 215 tonnes of CO2 emissions.

Neocrete is now set for its largest deployment in the redevelopment of Brunei's primary port, Muara Port. The major infrastructure project is expected to utilize approximately 65,000 cubic metres of Neocrete's specialized concrete. Projections indicate this will save around $300,000 in costs and prevent the emission of 5,200 tonnes of carbon dioxide.

Investor Confidence and Strategic Support

The funding round highlights strong investor confidence in Neocrete's market-ready solution and its potential for global impact. Ryan Tan of C3H noted the company stands out for its ability to reduce emissions and costs while delivering a high-performance product. Beyond capital, C3H will provide strategic connections through the Temasek Trust network to accelerate commercial deployment.

Investors are particularly attracted to Neocrete's ability to eliminate the "green premium" often associated with sustainable products. CEO Zarina Alexander emphasized that customers are unwilling to pay more for net-zero solutions in the concrete industry. By enhancing the performance of abundant, low-cost materials, Neocrete has demonstrated that cutting carbon and costs can be achieved simultaneously.

This $3.5 million investment marks a pivotal moment for Neocrete, validating its innovative approach to decarbonizing a hard-to-abate sector. The new capital will be instrumental in scaling operations and expanding the company's reach into key international markets. Neocrete is now well-positioned to drive significant change in the global construction industry, making sustainable concrete the new standard.
