Deep-tech company Mitti Labs has successfully secured $9.5 million in a Series A funding round led by Aramco Ventures. The investment is aimed at scaling the company's GeoAI platform, which addresses the significant water and climate challenges in global rice cultivation. This new capital will fuel geographical expansion and enhance technological capabilities to support millions of smallholder farmers across Asia.

Addressing a Global Agricultural Challenge

Rice, a staple food for half the world's population, places a considerable strain on environmental resources. Its cultivation consumes over 30% of all irrigation water, making it the most water-intensive crop globally. Traditional farming methods also contribute significantly to climate change through the release of potent greenhouse gases.

The continuous flooding of rice paddies creates anaerobic conditions ideal for methane-producing microbes. This practice makes rice farming a major source of methane, a gas responsible for a third of current global warming. As climate change intensifies, threatening water supplies, these unsustainable methods endanger both food security and environmental stability.

A Technological Approach to Sustainable Farming

Mitti Labs confronts these issues with its advanced GeoAI platform, developed with support from NASA. The system fuses synthetic aperture radar (SAR) satellite data with ground-truth information to create digital twins of individual rice plots. This technology provides unprecedented field-level insights into crop health, soil moisture, and water usage.

These detailed analytics enable the large-scale implementation of scientifically-backed irrigation techniques like Alternate Wetting and Drying (AWD). This method can reduce water consumption by nearly 40% and cut methane emissions by over 50% without compromising crop yields. Mitti Labs' platform effectively bridges the critical data gap that has historically hindered sustainable practices on small farms.

Strategic Expansion and Investor Confidence

The new funding will be instrumental in expanding Mitti Labs' operational footprint within India and launching new projects in the Philippines and Indonesia. This strategic growth aims to bring the benefits of its technology to a wider network of smallholder farmers. The investment underscores a growing recognition of the need for scalable solutions in sustainable agriculture.

Lead investor Aramco Ventures highlighted the platform's ability to solve the challenge of monitoring millions of small farms. Zayed AlAmri noted that understanding field-level activities is crucial for driving change in water and methane management. This sentiment was echoed by other investors who see the technology as a key to unlocking new revenue opportunities.

Hemant Mohapatra of Lightspeed India emphasized the platform's potential to transform rice cultivation by connecting farmers with industry stakeholders. Similarly, Burjis Godrej of Godrej Industries Group praised the model for leveraging technology to secure farmer livelihoods. This broad support signals strong confidence in the company's scalable and impactful approach to reshaping Asian agriculture.

Proven Impact and Future Outlook

Since its launch in 2023, Mitti Labs has demonstrated significant real-world impact through its farmer-centric operational model. The company has already scaled its operations to become the largest AWD rice program in the world. Its initiatives have resulted in saving 500 billion liters of water, equivalent to the annual supply for a major city like Bengaluru.

The company has attracted major clients, including Cool Effect, Ebro Foods, and Syngenta, validating its commercial viability. With a team of 150 employees and total funding of $12.5 million, Mitti Labs is well-positioned for continued growth. Its model focuses on building resilient livelihoods for the 150 million smallholder farmers who are central to the global rice supply.

This $9.5 million investment marks a pivotal moment for Mitti Labs and the future of sustainable agriculture. By combining advanced satellite technology with a scalable operational model, the company is directly addressing critical food security and climate challenges. The strong backing from prominent investors validates its mission to transform rice farming for a more water-resilient and climate-friendly world.
