Mercado Bitcoin, one of Latin America's leading digital asset exchanges, has completed its largest technological restructuring since it was founded in 2013. The modernization was designed to meet institutional investors' demand for faster order execution in a market that never closes. As a result, the platform's response speed improved by 300 times, moving from approximately 300 milliseconds to about 1 millisecond.
A Platform Built for Constant Trading
Unlike traditional financial exchanges that operate during fixed business hours, cryptocurrency markets remain active around the clock. Mercado Bitcoin's previous architecture processed requests in about 300 milliseconds, but periods of high transaction volume exposed the need for lower latency. The new one millisecond response capability is intended to accommodate thousands of simultaneous orders.
Institutional Demand Behind Modernization
Institutional investors have become the dominant force on Mercado Bitcoin. In 2025 they represented 63 percent of traded volume on average, while retail investors accounted for 37 percent. On some days institutional participation exceeded 80 percent of total transaction value, reflecting a broader movement of professional capital into digital assets.
Speed as a Competitive Requirement
In cryptocurrency markets, a single millisecond can determine whether an investor captures the best available price. Thousands of orders can arrive within the same second as multiple traders pursue identical opportunities. Thiago Fagundes, business director at Mercado Bitcoin, explained that one millisecond capacity supports more orders and improves execution for institutional strategies.
Regulatory Progress Encourages Institutional Entry
The rising institutional interest is closely tied to regulatory maturation in Brazil and the United States. In late 2024 Brazil's Central Bank published three resolutions establishing virtual asset service providers, including exchanges and platforms that deal with crypto assets, tokens, and stablecoins. These rules provide greater legal security and encourage traditional institutions to understand and enter the market.
Better Liquidity and Tighter Spreads
Although the upgrade was primarily aimed at institutional clients, the effects are expected to extend across the entire customer base. Greater execution speed allows market makers to operate with narrower spreads and lower slippage, making trades cheaper and faster for all participants. The company notes that platform efficiency alone does not improve these indicators, but it supports conditions that indirectly enhance liquidity and pricing for retail investors.
Expanding Connectivity Through FIX Protocol
Mercado Bitcoin also updated its API connectivity model for treasuries, funds, and high frequency traders. The exchange previously relied on the REST protocol, where clients request information and servers respond to each query. It now also offers the FIX protocol, a standard in traditional finance that delivers quotes continuously without repeated client requests.
Partnership with Adaptive and Competitive Ambitions
The modernization was executed in partnership with Adaptive, a firm specializing in trading technology and financial architecture modernization. Adaptive has experience working with exchanges and institutions in traditional markets. The collaboration supports Mercado Bitcoin's goal to become a top platform in the Southern Hemisphere for speed, efficiency, and low latency.
Mercado Bitcoin's modernization signals a strategic response to the growing presence of institutional investors in digital asset markets. By combining faster execution, regulatory alignment, and expanded connectivity, the exchange aims to strengthen its competitive position. The broader investor base may also capture the benefits through improved pricing and more efficient trading conditions, reinforcing client confidence in the platform's evolution.
