Luxembourg Space Biotech Exobiosphere Awarded €1 Million in Funding

Exobiosphere, a pioneering space biotechnology startup based in Luxembourg, has secured €1 million in non-dilutive funding to advance its mission of drug discovery in microgravity. The grant was awarded through the nation's Jeune Entreprise Innovante (JEI) aid scheme, which is administered by the Ministry of the Economy. This significant financial injection will propel the company's efforts to commercialize its unique orbital research platform.


A Strategic Boost for Commercial Expansion

The capital infusion is earmarked for accelerating Exobiosphere's commercial expansion, enhancing internal operations, and scaling its proprietary orbital screening technology. Co-founder and CEO Kyle Acierno stated the grant arrives at a critical moment, enabling the company to strengthen its team and expand its global partnerships. This funding provides a substantial runway for the young company to transition into its next phase of growth.

The Jeune Entreprise Innovante scheme is specifically designed to support young, research-intensive companies with high growth potential. It pairs non-dilutive public funding with private investment, co-financing up to 70% of a company's needs over three years. To qualify, Exobiosphere first obtained an innovation certificate from Luxinnovation, confirming its status as a leading-edge enterprise.

Pioneering High-Throughput Screening in Orbit

At the heart of Exobiosphere's operations is its Orbital High-Throughput Screening (OHTS) system, the first standardized platform of its kind. This advanced system is engineered to conduct more than 2,000 simultaneous automated experiments during a single mission. All in-orbit activities are mirrored in real time to Earth-based control systems, ensuring constant monitoring and data integrity.

The OHTS platform automates complex biomedical processes, including feeding and differentiating cells and dispensing therapeutic or toxic compounds. It also handles sample processing and performs crucial readouts using microscopy and plate-reader technologies. These capabilities support sophisticated applications like automated stem cell differentiation and compound potency testing for new drugs.

The Microgravity Advantage in Disease Research

Exobiosphere's innovative approach is founded on the principle that microgravity accelerates key biological processes that unfold much more slowly on Earth. This includes phenomena such as cellular senescence, immune system dysregulation, and the aggressiveness of tumors. This unique environment allows for the study of disease progression in a compressed timeframe, offering new research possibilities.

By leveraging this accelerated biological activity, researchers can observe disease mechanisms and drug responses that are impossible to capture with standard in-vitro models. The company is actively exploring several therapeutic areas, including oncology, neurodegeneration, ageing, and cardiovascular disease. This research aims to unlock novel insights and ultimately find what the company calls "cures from space".
