The Victorian Government has announced a significant strategic move to merge two of its key innovation agencies, LaunchVic and Breakthrough Victoria. This initiative aims to create a single, streamlined entity designed to bolster the state's globally recognized innovation ecosystem. The new organization is slated to become operational in the second half of 2026, reinforcing Victoria's position as a leading hub for ideas and commercialization.

Streamlining Innovation Support

The decision follows the Victorian Government’s recent Innovation and Commercialisation Review, which affirmed the strength of the state's innovation sector. The review highlighted the critical role government investment has played in fostering growth across key industries and capabilities. It ultimately recommended a more integrated approach to better support the ecosystem's continued expansion and success.

In response to the review, the government is establishing a new body to act as a unified 'front door' for innovation support. This consolidation is intended to simplify access to resources for founders, entrepreneurs, and investors across the state. The goal is to create a more cohesive and efficient system that nurtures new ideas from conception to market.

A Unified Vision for Economic Growth

The primary objective of the merged entity will be to strengthen Victoria’s capacity for commercializing groundbreaking research and ideas. It will focus on building the capabilities of innovative companies and individuals while simultaneously working to grow the pool of available capital. This integrated approach is expected to provide more comprehensive support throughout the entire innovation lifecycle.

By fostering a more robust environment for startups and scale-ups, the government aims to attract greater investment into the state. This strategic consolidation is projected to stimulate significant economic activity and drive the creation of high-value jobs. The initiative reinforces Victoria's ambition to be recognized as Australia’s undisputed ‘ideas capital’ on the global stage.

Managing the Transition and Ensuring Continuity

To oversee the complex integration process, a dedicated Transition Committee is being formed with representatives from both LaunchVic and Breakthrough Victoria. This committee will be responsible for ensuring that the critical functions and expertise of each organization are seamlessly combined. The government plans to appoint a Chair, Board, and CEO well ahead of the official launch to steer the new entity.

While the integration work progresses, both LaunchVic and Breakthrough Victoria will continue their operations without interruption. Stakeholders are assured that it is business as usual, with all planned activities and commitments set to proceed as scheduled. This ensures that the innovation ecosystem receives uninterrupted support during the transition period leading up to the 2026 launch.

This strategic merger represents a forward-thinking step by the Victorian Government to future-proof its innovation landscape. By unifying its key support agencies, the state is creating a powerful, centralized platform to accelerate commercialization, attract investment, and secure its reputation as a premier destination for innovators. The move signals a clear commitment to fostering sustainable economic growth and job creation through technological advancement.
